Miss — Adjusted EPS $0.27 vs ~$0.28 consensus
Genworth’s Q3 earnings missed the market’s adjusted EPS bar as Enact profit fell, mortgage-insurance losses rose, and Closed Block pressure intensified.
Genworth is a holding company balancing three businesses: Enact remains the main earnings and capital-return engine, CareScout is still being built as a long-term-care platform, and the legacy Closed Block is being managed toward self-sustainability while running off. That setup made this quarter’s key test whether Enact could keep funding the transition while Closed Block losses stayed contained.
The core earnings result came in just below the market’s bar. Adjusted operating income excluding Closed Block was $102 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, versus $112 million and $0.29 in Q2; published consensus was approximately $0.28 per share. That makes this a genuine, though narrow, miss rather than a routine in-line quarter.
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 / Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS, ex-Closed Block (Consolidated Metrics) | $0.27 | $0.29 | ~$0.28 consensus |
| Enact adjusted operating income (Operating Metrics) | $132M | $143M | $134M |
| Enact loss ratio (Operating Metrics) | 20% | 14% | 15% |
| Closed Block adjusted operating loss (Reconciliation) | $(146)M | $(110)M | $(96)M |
| Statutory pre-tax income (loss) (Statutory Results) | $(143)M | $6M | $(12)M |
| GLIC RBC ratio (Statutory Results) | 274% | 286% | 303% |
Enact remained profitable, but the quality of that profit weakened. Adjusted operating income fell to $132 million from $143 million, new insurance written declined sequentially to $14.1 billion, and the loss ratio rose to 20% from 14%. The portfolio and insurance in-force still grew, and a $37 million reserve release helped results, but the quarter relied on favorable claims development while underwriting pressure increased.
The legacy insurance block was the bigger deterioration. Closed Block’s adjusted operating loss widened to $146 million from $110 million, with statutory pre-tax losses reaching $143 million versus a $6 million profit in Q2. Long-term-care claims continued to grow as the block ages, while the RBC ratio declined to 274% from 286%; the filing still describes premium increases and benefit reductions as helping, but the quarter shows those actions are not yet preventing volatile losses. 〔0〕
CareScout progress was visible but still too small to offset the pressure. CareScout Services revenue rose to $7 million from $6 million sequentially, while Corporate and Other remained a $30 million adjusted operating loss. Genworth also spent $80 million on share repurchases and retired $21 million of holding-company debt, but holding-company liquidity was $320 million, including approximately $200 million reserved for future obligations—so capital returns continue alongside a meaningful liquidity constraint.
Bottom line: The quarter weakens the near-term execution story: Enact slowed and the Closed Block absorbed more capital and earnings than expected. The broader strategy remains intact, but this filing shows the transition is carrying more operating strain than the headline adjusted profit suggests.
