CEO/CFO succession
Genworth announces a CEO change: Tom McInerney retires, with internal successors taking over as the company scales CareScout and manages legacy insurance.
Genworth is balancing three businesses: Enact provides the main cash-generating engine, the Closed Block is being managed toward self-sustainability, and CareScout is the early-stage growth platform aimed at expanding beyond legacy long-term-care insurance. Recent company disclosures describe CareScout as still requiring investment while Genworth works to scale its services and insurance businesses.
The succession plan favors continuity, not a strategic reset. CEO Tom McInerney will retire on December 31, 2026, while CFO Jerome Upton is expected to become CEO and Closed Block CFO Angela Simmons is expected to become corporate CFO. 〔0〕 〔1〕 〔2〕
The internal handoff reduces execution risk around CareScout. Upton has been with Genworth since 1998 and has served as CFO since March 2023, giving him direct exposure to the capital allocation, legacy-insurance cleanup, and CareScout buildout already underway. 〔3〕 That is reassuring for strategic continuity, but it also means the filing does not provide a new catalyst, sharper targets, or evidence that CareScout’s early investments will produce returns faster.
The main uncertainty is leadership transition rather than business direction. McInerney’s 14-year tenure ends as Genworth shifts from strengthening the balance sheet and managing long-term-care liabilities toward proving that CareScout can become a durable growth business. Simmons’ experience with the Closed Block supports financial continuity, but the company will still need to demonstrate that the new leadership team can execute without slowing CareScout’s scale-up or capital-return priorities.
Bottom line: This is a measured, internally managed transition that protects Genworth’s existing strategy but does not improve the underlying CareScout opportunity by itself. It is more continuity-positive than disruptive, with the real test beginning when the new leadership team takes over on January 1, 2027.
