Beat — Adjusted EPS $(0.70) vs ~$1.00 loss consensus
Humana’s Q3 earnings beat the expected loss, while a higher 2026 adjusted EPS guide offsets a sharp Insurance segment downturn.
Humana is navigating a Medicare Advantage quality-rating setback while trying to restore insurance profitability and build CenterWell into a larger care-delivery engine; recent 2027 ratings improvement put 95% of members in plans rated four stars or higher, while the company has continued expanding CenterWell and its Medicaid footprint.
The quarter beat a loss that was already expected. Adjusted EPS was a $0.70 loss versus a published consensus near a $1.00 loss, and revenue was $41.16 billion versus roughly $40.87 billion expected. The direction was known—management had previewed Q3 adjusted EPS at approximately negative $1.00—but execution came in modestly better than that low bar.
| Metric | 3Q26 / FY26 | Comparison | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS (EPS) | $(0.70) | $(3.24) | $(1.00) |
| Revenue (CONSOLIDATED Revenues) | $41,155M (+26.1%) | $32,649M | $40,870M |
| Adjusted EPS guidance (EPS guidance) | At least $9.50 | $17.14 FY25 | At least $9.00 |
| GAAP EPS guidance (EPS guidance) | At least $15.09 | $9.84 FY25 | At least $6.52 |
| Insurance segment adjusted operating income (Insurance segment) | $(299)M | $270M | |
| YTD adjusted EPS (EPS) | $17.17 | $21.10 |
The more important signal is the guidance raise. Humana lifted FY 2026 adjusted EPS to at least $9.50 from at least $9.00, modestly above the roughly $9.12–$9.16 published consensus range. That suggests management sees enough offsetting execution or cost control to improve the underlying outlook despite the previously expected Star Ratings hit. The filing says, “Humana revises its GAAP EPS guidance for the year ending December 31, 2026 (FY 2026) to 'at least $15.09' from 'at least $6.52', while raising its Adjusted EPS guidance to 'at least $9.50' from the previous guidance of 'at least $9.00'.”
The core insurance business is still the unresolved weakness. Insurance segment adjusted operating results swung to a $299 million loss from $270 million of income a year earlier, and nine-month adjusted EPS fell to $17.17 from $21.10. The raise therefore improves confidence that Humana can manage through the downturn; it does not show that the insurance earnings problem has been fixed.
The GAAP guide increase is less economically meaningful than it looks. Much of the jump reflects a noncash reversal of an approximately $1.2 billion put liability tied to the prior CenterWell joint ventures, rather than a comparable improvement in recurring operations. The filing says the reversal was “reflected in the company's September 30, 2026 balance sheet.” The replacement joint venture with BlackRock and CenterWell may improve financing flexibility, but its initial option liability is also excluded from adjusted earnings and is expected in the fourth quarter. 〔0〕
Bottom line: This is a modestly better earnings update, not a clean recovery: Humana beat an expected Q3 loss and raised adjusted guidance, but the Insurance segment remains materially impaired and the GAAP improvement is heavily accounting-driven.immering
