Beat — Adj. EPS $4.87 vs ~$4.45 consensus
EOG Resources earnings beat consensus on stronger production, higher margins and sharply lower net debt, despite softer realized prices.
EOG is a large U.S.-led oil and gas producer coming off the Encino acquisition, focused on growing output while funding development, buybacks and dividends from internally generated cash. Its 2026 plan called for roughly 5% production growth and about $6.3-$6.7 billion of capital spending. The quarter cleared a high earnings bar. Adjusted diluted EPS was $4.87 versus published estimates around $4.45-$4.47, while GAAP diluted EPS reached $5.33; the beat was not just an accounting artifact, because production increased and operating margins remained strong.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS, GAAP (Income Statement) | $5.33 | $2.70 | ~$4.45 |
| Diluted EPS, adjusted (Adjusted Net Income) | $4.87 | $2.71 | ~$4.45 |
| Operating revenues (Income Statement) | $8,549M | $5,847M | |
| Crude-oil-equivalent production (Volumes and Prices) | 1,410.4 MBoed | 1,301.2 MBoed | |
| Free cash flow (Cash Flow from Operations and Free Cash Flow) | $2,176M | $1,383M | |
| Net debt / total capitalization (Net Debt-to-Total Capitalization Ratio) | 6.2% | 12.1% |
The operational engine is doing more of the work. Total production rose 8.4% from the year-earlier quarter to 1,410.4 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, with U.S. crude output broadly stable but natural gas and NGL volumes materially higher. The filing’s fourth-quarter forecast points to another step up to 1,433.1 MBoed, implying continued execution rather than a one-quarter spike. (Volumes and Prices)
Cash generation held up despite lower realized prices. Revenue from crude oil, NGLs and natural gas fell sequentially as composite realized revenue declined to $48.05 per Boe from $50.52, but Q3 free cash flow still reached $2.176 billion. The reported result also benefited from $242 million of net asset-disposition gains and $105 million of mark-to-market derivative gains, which is why the adjusted EPS figure is the cleaner read on underlying performance. (Revenues, Costs and Margins Per Barrel of Oil Equivalent) The company stated that adjusted earnings remove mark-to-market effects and asset-disposition gains. 〔0〕
The balance sheet and capital-return story improved materially. Net debt fell to $2.175 billion from $4.164 billion a year earlier, reducing net debt-to-total capitalization to 6.2% from 12.1%. EOG also repurchased $1.063 billion of stock during the quarter while continuing its $1.02-per-share quarterly dividend, showing that the stronger cash flow is being returned rather than absorbed by higher leverage. (Net Debt-to-Total Capitalization Ratio; Cash Flow Statements; Income Statements)
Bottom line: This was a genuine earnings beat supported by higher production, healthy margins and a much stronger balance sheet. Lower realized prices and one-time gains temper the quality of the headline, but the operating story still moved clearly forward versus expectations.
