EOG raises Q3 tax guidance as oil prices surge

Tax expense raised — Q3 tax expense $835–935M vs $545–645M prior guidance

EOG’s tax guidance jumps on stronger crude prices, signaling more operating upside but a heavier near-term cash tax burden.

EOG is executing a growth-oriented U.S. and international oil-and-gas program, with a $6.5 billion 2026 capital plan targeting roughly 5% oil-production growth and 13% total-volume growth; its main operating focus is the Delaware Basin, Utica, Eagle Ford, Dorado and international assets.

The immediate change is a much higher tax bill. EOG lifted its third-quarter current-tax guidance to $835 million–$935 million from $545 million–$645 million, taking the midpoint from $595 million to $885 million—a $290 million increase.

This is not a production or capital-plan reset; it is an earnings-and-cash-flow consequence of stronger oil prices. The filing attributes the increase to crude prices realized during the quarter and expected for the full year being above EOG’s August assumptions. 〔0〕 The underlying commodity-price surprise is favorable for revenue and operating cash generation, but a large portion is being absorbed immediately by taxes.

The filing adds modest cash-flow support, but not a new hedge catalyst. EOG received $40 million from settled financial commodity derivatives, while its Brent-linked natural-gas contract generated no cash because deliveries are not expected to begin until January 2027. 〔1〕

Bottom line: The update confirms stronger oil economics than EOG expected, but it also makes the near-term cash-tax drag materially larger. That makes the filing a two-sided improvement in the operating story rather than a clean upgrade to retained cash flow.

The scheduled next catalyst is EOG’s third-quarter results on November 6, 2026.
