Beat — Diluted EPS $1.03 vs ~$0.53 consensus
Green Plains earnings beat Q3 EPS expectations on stronger ethanol margins and 45Z credits, though revenue and production volumes declined.
Green Plains is rebuilding around low-carbon ethanol, carbon-intensity improvements and monetizable Section 45Z credits, while shrinking its conventional footprint after asset sales. All of its operating facilities were expected to qualify for 45Z credits in 2026, and the company separately disclosed a deal to monetize up to $325 million of those credits, making the credit engine an established part of the story rather than a surprise.
The quarter was a clear earnings beat, but not a clean volume-growth story. Diluted EPS of $1.03 was well above the published consensus of roughly $0.53, while revenue of $496.0 million trailed the roughly $509.0 million estimate. The gap came from profitability, not top-line expansion: consolidated ethanol crush margin more than doubled year over year, even as ethanol gallons sold fell 11.3% and revenue declined 2.5%. The filing attributes the lower volume partly to the disposition of the Obion, Tennessee plant.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $1.03 | $0.17 | $0.53 |
| Revenue (Income Statement) | $496.0M (-2.5%) | $508.5M | $509.0M |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation) | $118.0M (+124.4%) | $52.6M | |
| Ethanol crush margin (Ethanol crush margin table) | $122.8M (+106.0%) | $59.6M |
The earnings quality is mixed, but the operating improvement is real. Section 45Z credits contributed $67.2 million to ethanol production gross margin, and management said the year-over-year adjusted EBITDA increase primarily reflected $42.3 million of additional 45Z credits, higher ethanol margins and lower overhead. That means the beat is heavily policy- and credit-dependent, but it was not solely an accounting reversal: ethanol operating income and crush margin also improved materially.
The balance sheet gives the improved earnings more room to work. Green Plains ended the quarter with $225.1 million of cash and restricted cash, $290.0 million of revolver availability and $477.7 million of total debt. The recently disclosed 45Z monetization agreement should improve cash visibility, but the filing does not yet show the monetization proceeds in this quarter's operating cash flow; nine-month operating cash flow was only $47.4 million, pressured by a $215.3 million working-capital use.
Bottom line: Green Plains materially beat the earnings bar because 45Z credits and stronger ethanol margins more than offset lower volumes and revenue. It advances the low-carbon monetization story, but the next test is whether the underlying base business can keep improving without an equivalent increase in tax-credit support.
Q4 results, expected early February 2027
