Alector earnings beat as Genentech deal funds ABC pipeline into 2029

Beat — EPS $1.11 vs ~-$0.23 consensus; revenue $162.9M vs ~$2.2M consensus

Alector’s third-quarter earnings beat consensus, but the headline revenue is largely deferred GSK revenue recognition. The durable change is Genentech funding and a longer runway for its ABC pipeline.

Alector is rebuilding itself around the Alector Brain Carrier, shifting from discontinued or wound-down clinical programs toward an entirely preclinical platform pipeline led by AL137, AL164, and AL062. Its prior second-quarter update described the ABC portfolio as the central strategy but only expected runway through at least 2027; the Genentech transaction and equity raise now extend that operating window into the second half of 2029.

The quarter was a large accounting beat, not a comparable operating surge. Collaboration revenue reached $162.9 million versus roughly $2.2 million of published consensus, and EPS was $1.11 versus an expected loss of about $0.23. The revenue increase mainly came from recognizing deferred revenue after GSK terminated its agreement, so the headline beat does not represent recurring product demand or a commercial launch.

The durable improvement is financial flexibility. Alector received a $100 million Genentech upfront payment for worldwide AL050 rights and raised approximately $75 million in gross proceeds through an equity offering priced at a 7.3% premium to the prior closing price. The company says those funds, together with existing cash, support operations into the second half of 2029, materially reducing the immediate financing pressure that previously constrained the ABC buildout. 〔0〕

The pipeline has advanced, but the evidence remains preclinical. AL137 is now targeting first-in-human dosing in Australia by April 2027, while AL164 and AL062 target first-in-human studies in the second quarter of 2028. The reported 76% tau-mRNA knockdown for AL164 and 94% SNCA reduction for AL062 are encouraging pharmacology signals in non-human primates, not proof of human safety or efficacy. 〔1〕

Most of the strategic news was already known before this earnings release. The Genentech license, equity financing, and broad runway extension had been disclosed around the preceding quarter, so this filing mainly confirms the new capital structure and adds detail on program timing and preclinical results rather than introducing a wholly new business direction. The key unresolved question is whether ABC can translate its animal exposure and knockdown results into successful human studies.

Bottom line: Alector beat a very low quarterly bar, but the earnings headline is mostly one-time accounting. The meaningful change is that Genentech cash and the equity raise give the ABC pipeline enough runway to reach several clinical entry points, making this a modestly positive business update rather than a fundamental proof point.
