Beat — Non-GAAP diluted EPS $1.18 vs. $0.96-$1.00 outlook
BILL earnings beat its Q1 outlook on core revenue, operating income and EPS, while the accounting reset makes the FY27 guidance lift look smaller than the profit improvement.
BILL is transitioning from a payments-and-expense software company into a broader AI-enabled finance platform, using AP/AR, spend management, embedded products and new AI agents to deepen customer usage. Its fiscal 2026 filing described BILL AI and embedded partnerships as core growth initiatives, while the latest quarter shows the integrated platform continuing to expand even as the broader customer count softens.
The quarter beat the company’s own bar by a meaningful margin. Core revenue reached $316.4 million, up 14% year over year, and total revenue reached $353.8 million; both exceeded the August outlook translated onto the new rewards-net presentation. Non-GAAP operating income of $136.9 million was well above the $112.5-$117.5 million outlook, while diluted non-GAAP EPS of $1.18 topped the $0.96-$1.00 range. The biggest surprise is therefore profitability, not just revenue.
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Outlook / prior equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core revenue (Financial Highlights) | $316.4M (+14.3%) | $276.7M | $305.5-$315.5M |
| Total revenue (Income Statement) | $353.8M (+12.5%) | $314.5M | $340.0-$350.0M |
| Non-GAAP operating income (Operating income reconciliation) | $136.9M (+100.6%) | $68.2M | $112.5-$117.5M |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS (EPS reconciliation) | $1.18 (+93.4%) | $0.61 | $0.96-$1.00 |
| FY27 total revenue guide (Guidance) | $1,433.5-$1,463.5M | — | $1,406.0-$1,456.0M |
| FY27 core revenue guide (Guidance) | $1,283.5-$1,313.5M | — | $1,268.0-$1,318.0M |
The guidance move is positive, but not a wholesale reset. On a comparable revenue-net-of-rewards basis, the new FY27 total-revenue range is modestly above the August equivalent at the midpoint, while the core-revenue midpoint is only slightly higher. That makes this a raised outlook, but the major change is that BILL has now demonstrated much stronger near-term operating leverage than its prior profitability guide implied. 〔0〕
The accounting change creates a presentation trap, not an economic deterioration. Rewards are now deducted from revenue rather than recorded in sales and marketing; the company says the change has no effect on operating income, net income, per-share earnings, balance sheet or cash flow. Revenue and margin comparisons with figures reported before this quarter are therefore not clean unless they are recast, which is why the translated August ranges matter more than the headline revenue presentation. 〔1〕
The underlying platform story is improving, but customer breadth is not uniformly healthy. Integrated Platform users rose to 233,400 from 229,800 and BILL AP/AR customers rose to 186,300 from 183,300, while total businesses using solutions declined to 475,300 from 479,300 because Embedded Solutions and Other customers continued to fall. That leaves the quarter’s strong financial execution resting more on deeper usage and mix than on broad-based customer expansion. (Businesses using solutions; Revenue by solution)
Cash generation held steady while capital returned to shareholders. Free cash flow was $82.9 million versus $82.3 million a year earlier, but BILL also spent $312.2 million on share repurchases, driving a $311.5 million decrease in total cash and restricted cash during the quarter. The buyback is a capital-allocation choice rather than a sign of operating cash weakness, but it materially reduced corporate liquidity. (Cash Flow statement)
Bottom line: This is a genuine earnings beat, led by much better operating leverage and a modestly higher FY27 outlook. The business story advances, although the customer-count decline and only limited guidance lift keep it from being a full strategic reset.
