Goodyear earnings miss as transformation push meets margin squeeze

Miss — Adjusted EPS $(0.11) vs roughly $(0.03) consensus

Goodyear’s Q3 earnings missed on adjusted EPS and revenue as Americas margins collapsed, forcing a broader transformation effort.

Goodyear is in the post-divestiture phase of its Goodyear Forward restructuring, trying to rebuild margins and cash generation while replacement-tire demand remains weak. The prior plan was designed around portfolio optimization, margin expansion and lower leverage, but the current quarter shows the core operating problem is not yet solved.

The quarter missed a modest market bar, not just the company’s own ambitions. Adjusted EPS was $(0.11) versus published expectations around $(0.03), while sales of $4.54 billion were slightly below the roughly $4.59–$4.60 billion consensus range. That makes this a genuine earnings miss, even after excluding $148 million of rationalization charges. (Financial Results)

Net sales (Financial Results)$4.54B (-2.3%)$4.65B~$4.59B
Adjusted diluted EPS (Financial Results)$(0.11)$0.28~$(0.03)
Segment operating income (Segment Results)$174M (-39%)$287M

The underlying margin trend is the bigger problem. Total segment operating income fell to $174 million from $287 million, cutting segment margin to 3.8% from 6.2%. The Americas, Goodyear’s largest region, generated only $96 million of operating income versus $206 million a year earlier as factory utilization, inflation and other costs overwhelmed the transformation benefits. (Segment Results — Americas)

There are isolated signs of execution, but they do not offset the core weakness. Asia Pacific improved operating income to $66 million from $51 million, and higher OE volumes in the Americas and EMEA indicate some market-share progress. However, total tire volume declined 3.3%, replacement demand remained weak, and nine-month operating margin was just 2.4% versus 4.8% last year. (Third Quarter Results; Segment Results)

The new transformation office is a response to the miss, not proof of a turnaround. Management explicitly says performance remains below expectations and is broadening the effort beyond incremental improvements toward structural operational and strategic changes. That raises the potential scope of the fix, but also signals that Goodyear Forward has not yet delivered the consistent returns and cash generation the business needs. (Third Quarter Results) 〔0〕

Cash generation remains a constraint. Goodyear produced $(764) million of operating cash flow through nine months, while total debt and finance leases increased to about $7.0 billion from $5.7 billion at year-end. (Cash Flow statement; Balance Sheet) The filing therefore shows a company trying to fund a larger operational reset from a still-strained financial base.

Bottom line: This was a modest but meaningful earnings miss: the portfolio and regional improvements are real, yet the largest business is losing margin and cash. The broader transformation effort keeps the story alive, but this filing weakens confidence that the existing plan is working fast enough.
