Supermicro earnings beat as AI revenue nears $20B, margins hold

Beat — Non-GAAP diluted EPS $1.81 vs ~$1.23 consensus

Supermicro’s Q1 earnings beat consensus on record AI-driven revenue and solid margins, while heavy working-capital needs kept operating cash flow negative.

Supermicro is in the middle of a rapid shift from server hardware maker to a broader AI datacenter-systems provider, expanding its Data Center Building Block Solutions, software, networking, cooling, and global production footprint. That strategy was already gaining traction before this release: the company entered fiscal 2027 citing more than $60 billion of new orders and record backlog.

The quarter beat a high bar and modestly exceeded even the company’s recent preliminary update. Revenue reached $19.946 billion, above the published consensus of about $17.53 billion and above the $18.5-$19.5 billion preliminary range disclosed in October. Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.81 versus roughly $1.23 expected. The filing calls this “record revenue of $19.9billion for the first quarter fiscal 2027.”

Margins improved, but the business is still carrying substantial execution risk. Non-GAAP gross margin was 12.8%, up from 9.5% a year earlier and slightly above the October preliminary range. That supports the company’s claim that its broader datacenter offering is improving economics, although the margin remains modest for a business delivering this much revenue. The filing reported, “The Non-GAAP gross margin for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 was 12.8%.”

The main weakness is cash conversion, not demand. Operating cash flow was negative $434 million as accounts receivable increased by roughly $3.56 billion and inventories by about $2.48 billion. Deferred revenue provided a $3.05 billion lift, but it was not enough to offset the investment tied to rapid shipment growth. Cash and equivalents also fell from $7.52 billion at June 30 to $6.90 billion at September 30. This does not overturn the growth story, but it shows that scaling AI infrastructure is consuming working capital before the reported profit fully turns into cash.

The new Q2 outlook keeps the revenue machine running at roughly this quarter’s level. Management guided to $19.5 billion-$21.5 billion of Q2 revenue and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $1.66-$1.90, which implies continued exceptionally high demand rather than a near-term slowdown. The filing says, “The Company expects net sales in the range of $19.5billion and $21.5billion for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 ending December 31, 2026.”

The results are preliminary, which slightly lowers the quality of the receipt. The company says its closing procedures were incomplete and that management and the audit committee had not finished their review, so final figures could change. The filing explicitly warns that “the actual results may differ materially from these preliminary estimated data.”

Bottom line: This is a clear operating beat that strengthens Supermicro’s AI-infrastructure growth story and confirms demand is running ahead of expectations. The offset is that rapid growth still requires heavy working capital, so the next test is whether strong reported earnings convert into cash.
