Miss — Adj. EPS ~$0.72 excluding listed benefits vs ~$0.74 consensus; FY midpoint cut to $3.25 from $3.37
Fortune Brands’ Q3 earnings were roughly in line on sales, but underlying EPS missed slightly and full-year guidance fell as turnaround actions expanded.
Fortune Brands is in the early stages of a multi-year turnaround focused on simplifying the portfolio, fixing execution and redirecting resources toward its core Water, Outdoors and Security businesses. Its initial 2026 outlook called for roughly flat-to-2% sales growth and $3.35–$3.65 of adjusted EPS, so this filing shows the reset is becoming more aggressive rather than nearing completion.
The headline quarter was not a clean beat. Sales of $1.114 billion were essentially in line with the roughly $1.12 billion consensus, but the $1.14 adjusted EPS included a $0.28 tax benefit and $0.14 of tariff refunds. Excluding those temporary benefits, EPS was approximately $0.72, slightly below the roughly $0.74 consensus. The company itself said results were in line with its outlook only “excluding the tax and tariff benefits.”
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $1,113.7M (-3.1%) | $1,149.2M | ~$1,120M |
| Adj. EPS, excluding listed benefits (Financial Highlights) | ~$0.72 | $1.09 | ~$0.74 |
| Operating margin before charges/gains (Financial Highlights) | 14.0% (-390 bps) | 17.9% | |
| FY26 adj. EPS midpoint (Guidance bridge) | $3.25 | $3.37 prior midpoint |
The more important signal is the guidance cut and weaker near-term setup. Full-year adjusted EPS fell to $3.20–$3.30 from a prior midpoint of $3.37, with the bridge assigning $0.23 of pressure to the core business and end markets and another $0.22 to portfolio-optimization and alignment actions. Fourth-quarter revenue is expected to fall to $925–$995 million as the company absorbs lower sales from exiting or selling businesses, softer single-family construction and reduced channel inventory.
The cleanup is strategically sensible but confirms the current business is underperforming. Fortune Brands is selling Fiberon, exiting commercial operations in China and rationalizing part of its EMEA Water footprint; together, those businesses carry annualized operating losses of roughly $50–$55 million on $320–$330 million of revenue. That can improve the portfolio later, but it also means the company is shrinking and spending now to reach a better mix.
Underlying operations remain uneven rather than broadly repaired. Water sales fell 5.5% and its adjusted operating margin dropped 680 basis points to 17.6%, while Outdoors’ adjusted margin was nearly flat and Security improved materially. The deterioration is concentrated in Water, the largest segment, and the company still expects the businesses being optimized to weigh on results through the fourth quarter and the first half of 2027.
Cash generation and leverage provide room to execute, but do not offset the earnings reset. Nine-month free cash flow reached $370.9 million versus $183.1 million a year earlier, and net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA was 2.5x. That gives the turnaround funding capacity, but the quarter’s adjusted operating income still fell 24.6%, showing that the issue is not just one-time accounting charges.
Bottom line: This is a modestly negative earnings update: the reported quarter looks acceptable only after temporary benefits, while guidance was cut and the turnaround requires deeper portfolio surgery. The strategic cleanup may improve the company later, but this filing says the business is still below the performance bar today.
