Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc. (RARE) · Nov 3, 2026 · Restructuring
20% workforce reduction — RIF expanded from prior 10% plan to approximately 20% of employees
Ultragenyx’s Q3 earnings missed revenue expectations, while a larger restructuring and $413M PRV sale support its 2027 profitability target.
Ultragenyx is moving from late-stage biotech development into commercial execution after securing approvals for GENGLYCOS and FAYUVI, but it is doing so with a smaller pipeline and a much tighter cost base. Earlier in 2026, management had already announced a roughly 10% workforce reduction and a path to 2027 profitability; the new filing substantially deepens that reset.
The quarter missed the revenue bar even as the loss improved. Third-quarter revenue was $173 million versus a published consensus of about $182 million, while the $1.16 per-share loss was better than the roughly $1.10 expected loss only in the sense that the reported loss was larger; on a conventional EPS comparison, -$1.16 is worse than -$1.10. Revenue grew 8% year over year, but the quarter did not show the commercial acceleration investors were looking for from the newly approved gene-therapy products.
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue (Selected Financial Data) | $173M (+8.1%) | $160M | ~$182M |
| Net loss per share (Net Loss) | $(1.16) | $(1.81) | ~$(1.10) |
| R&D expense (Statement of Operations) | $154M (-28.7%) | $216M | |
| SG&A expense (Statement of Operations) | $97M (+11.5%) | $87M | |
| 2026 total-revenue guide (Revenue Guidance) | $730M–$760M | $730M–$760M |
The bigger message is a forced acceleration of the profitability plan. Ultragenyx is cutting approximately 20% of employees, winding down GTX-102, terminating UX701 after it failed to meet its advancement criteria, and targeting 2027 R&D below $350 million and SG&A below $375 million. 〔0〕 This is financially supportive of the 2027 profitability target, but it also shows that management now needs a materially smaller organization and narrower development portfolio to reach it.
The cash picture improves, but the underlying operating position remains demanding. The completed GENGLYCOS PRV sale brought in $210 million gross, with 20% payable to the NIH, and the pending FAYUVI PRV sale would take aggregate PRV proceeds to $413 million and expected net proceeds to about $350 million. That capital is meaningful against $401 million of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at September 30, but it is nonrecurring and does not solve the need to execute the new launches.
The pipeline is being concentrated around fewer, more important shots on goal. The company is redirecting R&D toward DTX301 data expected in the first half of 2027, a possible regulatory path for UX143, and early programs while abandoning UX701. 〔1〕 That improves focus and reduces spending, but it raises the importance of successful launches and the next clinical milestones.
Bottom line: This is not a clean earnings beat: revenue fell short of expectations, and the sharper restructuring exposes more strain than the company’s upbeat framing suggests. The filing does strengthen the funding and cost-control case for 2027 profitability, but mainly by narrowing the business and raising execution dependence on the two new gene-therapy launches.
DTX301 Phase 3 data expected in the first half of 2027
