Miss — Revenue $430.8M vs ~$443–447M consensus
People Inc. earnings missed revenue expectations as AI-driven traffic declines and shrinking print offset licensing growth and stronger cash flow.
People Incorporated is simplifying around its People Inc. digital-publishing business and its MGM investment, while consolidating corporate functions to lower overhead. Its last reported quarter showed accelerating digital growth and a planned corporate run-rate of roughly $45 million, so this release tests whether that transition is overcoming traffic pressure.
The quarter missed the revenue bar. Revenue fell 4% to $430.8 million, below published estimates of roughly $443–447 million, while adjusted EBITDA was broadly flat year over year. The GAAP loss was dominated by a $1.12 billion unrealized loss on the MGM stake, making EPS a poor measure of the operating quarter.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $430.8M (-4%) | $447.1M | ~$443–447M |
| Digital revenue (Revenue by business) | $288.5M (+2%) | $283.2M | |
| Core sessions (Digital metrics) | 1,613M (-26%) | 2,168M | |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $54.8M (-1%) | $55.1M | |
| Free cash flow, nine months (Cash Flow statement) | $80.2M | $(12.5)M |
Digital growth is holding only because the mix is changing. Licensing and other revenue grew 49% and non-session-based digital revenue rose 15%, but session-based revenue fell 6% as AI-oriented search and content-discovery experiences reduced traffic. Core sessions dropped 26%, a more serious signal than the headline 2% digital-revenue increase because it threatens the advertising inventory that historically supported the business. 〔0〕
Print remains a clear drag. Print revenue fell 16% to $127.6 million and Print adjusted EBITDA declined 32% to $8.3 million. Digital operating income improved 27%, but digital adjusted EBITDA slipped 2% because higher selling, compensation, and software costs absorbed the revenue growth.
Cash generation and the restructuring plan are the offsets. Nine-month operating cash flow reached $105.6 million and free cash flow turned positive at $80.2 million, helped partly by prior-year lease payments and investment sales. The company also completed a $185.1 million fund-stake sale and executed staffing reductions expected to produce $15–20 million of Q4 severance expense, with corporate cost reduction still targeted for completion in Q1 2027. 〔1〕
The outlook is narrower, not meaningfully better. The revised full-year adjusted EBITDA range of $263–283 million is tighter than the prior $255–290 million range, but its midpoint is unchanged. That reads as confirmation of the existing plan rather than a new acceleration, especially since the company now expects only low-to-mid-single-digit Q4 digital-revenue growth while acknowledging the AI-driven traffic hit.
Bottom line: The operating transition is producing cash and better digital mix, but this quarter shows the core traffic engine weakening faster than monetization is improving. Against expectations, it is a modest earnings miss and a slightly negative update to the business story, not a reversal of the broader restructuring plan.
