Beat — Adjusted EPS $1.31 vs ~$1.25 consensus
Silgan’s third-quarter earnings beat expectations and its 2026 guidance midpoint rose, despite muted consumer demand, lower volumes and negative operating cash flow.
Silgan is entering a portfolio reset: it is combining its Metal Containers and food-and-beverage closures businesses with Trivium while emphasizing higher-growth dispensing products and separate capital priorities for its two future platforms. Against that backdrop, this quarter says the operating model is holding up better than demand, but the improvement is not broad-based.
The quarter beat on the metric that matters most for earnings. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.31 versus $1.22 a year ago and roughly $1.25 consensus, a narrow beat; revenue was $2.04 billion, up 2% but below the published ~$2.10 billion expectation. The company said adjusted EPS landed at the top of its own range. 〔0〕

The earnings quality was better than the headline revenue growth suggests. Metal Containers delivered a 10% increase in adjusted EBIT despite volumes falling 4%, helped by price/cost and mix. Custom Containers also grew adjusted EBIT 3% while volumes declined 8%, partly because Silgan exited lower-margin business. Dispensing was the weak spot: adjusted EBIT fell 2% as delayed inflation pass-through and manufacturing inefficiency offset growth in fragrance and pharma dispensing.
Management raised the earnings floor, not the demand outlook. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance moved from $3.73–$3.93 to $3.83–$3.93, lifting the midpoint by about 4% versus 2025 and modestly above the prior midpoint. The company still describes consumer demand as muted, so the upgrade is primarily an execution and cost-control signal rather than evidence of a broad volume recovery.
Cash conversion is the clearest counterweight. Nine-month operating cash flow worsened to a $646.4 million use from a $564.0 million use, driven chiefly by a larger working-capital drag from receivables and payables. Debt stood at $4.55 billion at September 30, 2026, above year-end, while cash fell to $325 million; management nevertheless maintained its roughly $450 million full-year free-cash-flow estimate.
Bottom line: This was a modest earnings beat with a small guidance upgrade, showing Silgan can protect profitability through weak volumes. It advances the portfolio-transformation story, but the revenue miss and strained nine-month cash conversion keep the improvement from being a clean, broad-based win.
