Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. (AKBA) · Oct 23, 2026 · Delisting
Nasdaq deficiency — 30 consecutive business days below $1.00; initial cure deadline April 19, 2027
Akebia’s Nasdaq deficiency notice is not an immediate delisting, but it puts a reverse split on the table as Vafseo commercialization continues.
Akebia is a commercial-stage kidney-disease biotech trying to scale Vafseo, its anemia treatment for dialysis patients, while advancing a rare-kidney-disease pipeline. Vafseo entered the U.S. market in January 2025, making commercialization and execution the company’s central business story.
The filing adds a real listing risk, not an immediate delisting. Nasdaq says Akebia’s bid price stayed below $1.00 for 30 consecutive business days. The company now has until April 19, 2027, to record a $1.00 closing bid for at least 10 consecutive business days. 〔0〕
The practical consequence is added financing and governance pressure while Vafseo is still scaling. If the share price does not recover naturally, Akebia may need a reverse stock split to preserve its Nasdaq listing; the company explicitly says that option is under evaluation. 〔1〕 That does not change Vafseo’s product economics or pipeline directly, but it adds a potentially dilutive or perception-sensitive corporate action to a business already dependent on commercial execution.
This is partly new rather than a complete surprise. Trading below $1 was likely visible before the notice, but the formal Nasdaq clock, the possibility of a second compliance period, and the eventual delisting process are newly defined. There is no earnings-style consensus benchmark here; versus Akebia’s standing commercialization story, this is a new operational complication rather than progress on the kidney-disease business.
Bottom line: Akebia is not being delisted now, but the notice creates a meaningful deadline and raises the prospect of a reverse split. It matters mainly because it adds capital-markets pressure while the company is trying to establish Vafseo as a growth platform.
