7-year exclusivity — FDA-recognized exclusivity from February 3, 2025; second-supplier approval targeted by mid-2027
Supernus’ ONAPGO regulatory update adds seven years of orphan exclusivity, while the second-supplier filing keeps the supply bottleneck unresolved until 2027.
Supernus is in the early commercial ramp of ONAPGO, its newly launched Parkinson’s therapy, after stronger-than-expected demand exposed supplier constraints; new-patient initiation resumed in February 2026, while the company has been working toward a second supplier expected to come online in 2027.
The filing adds meaningful regulatory protection, but not a new commercial product. The FDA recognized seven years of orphan-drug exclusive approval for ONAPGO, beginning on February 3, 2025. 〔0〕 That strengthens the product’s competitive protection through early 2032, but the underlying orphan designation and ONAPGO approval were already known; this is confirmation and formalization more than a surprise launch event.
The operational update is more incremental than transformative. Supernus has submitted the supplemental application for a second ONAPGO supplier and still expects possible FDA approval by mid-2027. 〔1〕 That advances the supply-diversification plan, but it does not remove the near-term dependency on the existing supplier or guarantee approval.
The filing improves ONAPGO’s long-term defensibility more than its near-term execution. The exclusivity is mildly positive versus the standing story, while the supply issue remains the practical limiter on how quickly Supernus can convert demand into sales. The company itself says the second-supplier filing follows an earlier supply problem. 〔2〕
Bottom line: This is a modestly positive regulatory milestone, not a step-change in the business. It protects ONAPGO’s opportunity, but the more important value driver remains successful second-supplier approval and reliable supply by 2027.
FDA decision on second ONAPGO supplier, expected mid-2027
