Mid Penn Bancorp Inc (MPB) · Oct 21, 2026 · Earnings
In line — Adjusted EPS $0.88 vs ~$0.88 consensus
Mid Penn’s Q3 earnings were broadly in line, but slower loan growth, weaker fee income and rising nonperforming assets complicate the acquisition story.
Mid Penn is integrating the 1st Colonial and William Penn acquisitions while trying to turn a larger Pennsylvania banking franchise into faster organic loan growth and a broader fee-income business, including wealth management. Cumberland Advisors also expanded that fee-income strategy; the 1st Colonial deal added substantial loans and deposits, making integration and organic growth the key operating test.
The quarter was broadly in line on underlying earnings, not a clean beat. Adjusted EPS was $0.88, matching the published consensus of roughly $0.88, while GAAP diluted EPS was $0.84. Net income rose 18.2% year over year to $21.6 million, but was essentially flat sequentially.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Comparison / expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS | $0.88 | ~$0.88 consensus |
| Diluted EPS | $0.84 | $0.79 in Q3 2025 (Income Statement) |
| Net income | $21.6M | $18.3M in Q3 2025 (Income Statement) |
| Net interest margin | 3.92% | 4.06% in Q2; 3.60% in Q3 2025 (Financial Highlights) |
| Loans | $5.64B | +1.4% annualized sequentially (Financial Highlights) |
| Deposits | $6.10B | +9.4% annualized sequentially (Financial Highlights) |
| Nonperforming assets | $47.0M | $36.8M in Q2; $27.3M in Q3 2025 (Asset Quality) |
| Dividend | $0.23/share | Up from $0.22 in Q2 (Financial Highlights) |
Deposit gathering is working better than loan deployment. Deposits grew $141.8 million during the quarter, led by interest-bearing transaction accounts, but loans increased only $19.3 million, or 1.4% annualized. That matters because the acquisition-driven balance-sheet expansion is supposed to translate into sustained organic lending, and management itself described loan growth as softer than expected.
The margin is still better than last year, but the sequential direction worsened. Net interest margin expanded 32 basis points year over year to 3.92%, yet fell 14 basis points from the prior quarter as loan yields weakened, purchase-accounting accretion declined by about $1.0 million, and funding costs rose. Net interest income consequently slipped to $64.6 million from $65.3 million sequentially. 〔0〕
Credit costs were favorable today, but the asset-quality trend is the real complication. The quarter produced a $1.6 million benefit for credit losses and only $78 thousand of net charge-offs, supporting reported earnings. But nonperforming assets climbed to $47.0 million from $36.8 million in the second quarter and $27.3 million a year earlier, with the increase concentrated in commercial real estate and foreclosed owner-occupied property.
The acquisition integration story is progressing, but not yet fully proving itself. Nine-month fee income was up 54.5%, helped by Cumberland Advisors, and branch closures are expected to produce savings within a year. Still, quarterly noninterest income fell 5.2% sequentially, the core efficiency ratio edged up to 60.57%, and the company acknowledged softer loan growth and fee generation. The dividend increase to $0.23 is a modest capital-return positive, but it does not change the operating read.
Bottom line: Mid Penn delivered roughly the earnings investors expected, with strong deposits and better year-over-year margins offset by slower lending, weaker quarterly fee income and rising nonperforming assets. The event keeps the acquisition-led growth story intact, but makes execution and credit quality more important in the next quarter.cea
