Miss — Q3 diluted EPS $0.25 vs $0.34 prior year; no published consensus
United Bancorp’s earnings fell after a one-off commercial charge-off, but net interest income, deposits and core revenue improved.
United Bancorp is a sub-$1 billion community bank investing heavily in deposit growth, fee businesses and a digital-service platform intended to support a larger regional footprint. Its prior-quarter filing described rising earnings, expanding deposits and a Unified Care Center aimed at digitizing account opening and customer service, while acknowledging that the investment cycle was temporarily dilutive.
The headline result missed the prior earnings trajectory because of one concentrated credit event. Third-quarter diluted EPS fell to $0.25 from $0.34 a year earlier, while net income declined 27.4%; management attributes the shortfall to a $2.953 million charge-off tied to one commercial borrower, which drove a $2.422 million provision for credit losses. 〔0〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Comparison | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $0.25 (-26.5%) | $0.34 | |
| Net income (Financial Highlights) | $1.402M (-27.4%) | $1.931M | |
| Net interest income (Financial Highlights) | $6.998M (+4.0%) | $6.729M | |
| Provision for credit losses (Financial Highlights) | $2.422M (+1,202.0%) | $0.186M | |
| PPNR (Financial Highlights) | $3.490M (+66.5%) | $2.097M | |
| Total deposits (Balance Sheet Highlights) | $722.5M (+12.0%) | $645.2M | |
| Net interest margin (Balance Sheet Highlights) | 3.84% (+0.18 pts) | 3.66% |
The underlying banking engine was better than the reported EPS suggests. Net interest income rose 4.0%, net interest margin expanded to 3.84%, deposits grew 12.0%, and pre-provision net revenue increased 66.5%. The combination indicates that lower-cost funding, loan repricing and fee-producing investments are beginning to improve operating performance before credit costs. Management specifically reported that normalized PPNR reached $3.490 million, including a $560,000 securities-sale gain.
Credit quality improved after the charge-off, but the loss exposed real single-borrower risk. Nonaccrual loans plus loans past due more than 30 days fell to $2.9 million, or 0.57% of gross loans, from $6.9 million in the prior quarter because the troubled relationship was charged off. That supports management’s claim that the problem was concentrated, but the quarter still produced $3.076 million of net charge-offs versus $0.212 million a year earlier, so the “one-time” characterization is not yet fully proven.
The strategic growth plan remains intact, but its payoff is still forward-looking. Deposits, fee income and the expanding margin support the case that investments in the Wheeling branch, mortgage, treasury management and technology are gaining traction. However, the more ambitious digital-bank initiative remains an execution story: management expects the Unified Center and related technology functions to begin rolling out by the end of the first quarter of 2027. 〔1〕
Bottom line: This was a reported earnings miss driven by a newly disclosed concentrated commercial loss, not a broad deterioration in the operating franchise. The core trend improved, but the credit event makes the quarter modestly negative until future periods show the loss was truly isolated.
Unified Center rollout expected by end of Q1 2027
