Miss — ongoing EPS $(0.04) vs ~$0.19 published estimate
Tredegar’s third-quarter earnings missed as aluminum and films profitability fell sharply. The One Tredegar turnaround still has to prove itself in 2027.
Tredegar is trying to turn two pressured industrial businesses—aluminum extrusions and specialty films—into a simpler, more accountable operating platform through its One Tredegar transformation. The prior quarter had shown a sharp aluminum-led rebound, with consolidated ongoing EBITDA of $14.2 million and aluminum EBITDA of $14.5 million, while management had said the transformation was underway and expected to produce meaningful benefits.
The quarter was a clear earnings miss, not merely a soft comparison. Ongoing diluted EPS fell to $(0.04), versus $0.26 a year earlier and roughly $0.19 from the available published estimate; consolidated ongoing EBITDA dropped to $4.1 million from $18.1 million. The filing’s own explanation is unusually direct: "clearly – they were not where we want them to be." 〔0〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales (Income Statement) | $207.2M | $194.9M | ~$195.8M |
| Ongoing diluted EPS (Non-GAAP Reconciliation) | $(0.04) | $0.26 | ~$0.19 |
| Consolidated ongoing EBITDA (Non-GAAP Reconciliation) | $4.1M | $18.1M | |
| Aluminum EBITDA (Segment results) | $2.5M | $16.8M | |
| Films EBITDA (Segment results) | $4.6M | $7.2M |
Aluminum was the main failure point. Revenue rose 9.1% only because higher metal prices were passed through, while volume fell 11.6%; EBITDA collapsed to $2.5 million from $16.8 million and was also far below Q2’s $14.5 million. Lower shipments, labor and maintenance costs, and a $2.8 million FIFO raw-material timing charge overwhelmed pricing benefits.
Films did not provide the expected cushion. High Performance Films EBITDA declined 35.6% to $4.6 million as Surface Protection volume fell 18.6% amid weak electronics demand and customer inventory corrections. Management still describes roughly $5 million per quarter as normalized films EBITDA, so this segment was weak but closer to its established earnings floor than aluminum.
The turnaround remains a promise rather than an operating result. Management says One Tredegar benefits remain on track to begin in the first quarter of 2027, but this quarter showed the gap between organizational change and measurable execution: nine-month ongoing EBITDA fell 24% to $30.0 million, while net debt rose to $32.7 million from $28.4 million at year-end as working capital and capital spending absorbed cash. 〔1〕
Bottom line: This materially weakens the near-term Tredegar story. The company still has a credible transformation plan and some healthier order signals, but Q3 showed that its largest business is losing profitability faster than the restructuring is producing benefits.
