Beat — Ongoing EPS $0.54 vs ~$0.53 consensus
PPL earnings narrowly beat expectations, while its new business plan lifts long-term EPS growth to 7%-9% and expands capital spending.
PPL is a regulated utility building out Kentucky and Pennsylvania networks and new generation capacity to serve fast-growing data-center demand; the market already knew the basic growth thesis, with its prior plan targeting 6%-8% EPS growth and a $23 billion 2026-2029 capital program.
The quarter was a narrow beat, not a blowout. Ongoing EPS reached $0.54 versus $0.48 a year ago and roughly $0.53-$0.54 in published estimates, while reported EPS was $0.49. The improvement came mainly from higher Kentucky and Pennsylvania rates, stronger sales, and added transmission revenue, partly offset by higher operating, depreciation, and interest costs.

The important change is the raised growth framework. PPL lifted its long-term EPS growth target to 7%-9% from 6%-8% and expects growth in the top half of the new range. That is a genuine upgrade to the business outlook, not merely a confident description of a quarter.
Data-center demand is becoming more tangible, but it remains execution-dependent. Kentucky’s pipeline reached 14.7 GW, with 2.3 GW under signed reimbursement agreements, while Pennsylvania’s advanced-stage pipeline reached 35.3 GW. The Invitium-QTS term sheet for roughly 2 GW is a meaningful commercial step, but it is nonbinding, excludes Invitium from the current business plan, and depends on approvals before the generation can be built.
The upgrade comes with a heavier funding burden. The capital plan rises to $25 billion for 2027-2030, and PPL expects about $3 billion of additional equity financing beyond more than $1.5 billion already arranged. That does not negate the better operating outlook, but it means more of the growth story must be funded through capital markets rather than current cash generation.
Bottom line: PPL delivered a small earnings beat, but the real signal is a credible-looking upgrade to its long-term growth target driven by large-load demand. The opportunity is now larger, though so are the capital requirements and execution risks.
