Miss — Operating loss $23.6M vs $12.8M prior year
MSG Rangers’ first earnings report after the spin-off shows modest revenue growth, but sharply higher expenses, cash burn and operating losses.
MSG Rangers is now a standalone sports company built around the New York Rangers, Hartford Wolf Pack and MSG Training Center, following the October 26, 2026 separation from MSG Knicks. The separation itself was expected and completed on schedule, so the new information is the early standalone cost and cash profile—not the spin-off mechanics.
Revenue barely moved while the cost base expanded sharply. First-quarter revenue rose just 3% to $14.1 million, helped mainly by higher league distributions, while direct operating expenses increased 145% and SG&A rose 26%; the company attributes part of SG&A growth to $3.6 million of spin-off costs, but team personnel costs also increased.
| $ millions | Q1 2026 | Q1 2025 | Jun. 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenues (Financial Highlights) | $14.1M (+3%) | $13.7M | |
| Operating loss (Financial Highlights) | $(23.6)M (+84% loss) | $(12.8)M | |
| Adjusted operating loss (Financial Highlights) | $(21.3)M | $(10.4)M | |
| Net cash used in operating activities (Cash Flow statement) | $(71.2)M | $(5.1)M | |
| Cash and cash equivalents (Balance Sheet) | $51M | $160M |
The deterioration is visible beneath the carve-out accounting noise. Management warns that historical results do not include all expenses the business would have incurred as a standalone company, making exact comparisons imperfect. Even allowing for that limitation and the $3.6 million of transaction costs, adjusted operating loss more than doubled, driven by higher team personnel provisions, compensation and corporate expenses. 〔0〕
Liquidity is the sharper concern than the income statement alone. Cash fell to $51 million from $160 million at June 30, while operating cash use widened to $71.2 million from $5.1 million; financing provided $71.3 million, effectively funding the quarter’s operating outflow. The first quarter is seasonally weaker for this type of sports business, so the cash burn should not be annualized mechanically, but the standalone company begins with little cash cushion relative to its reported liabilities. Prior company filings describe revenue and operating income as disproportionately concentrated in the second and third fiscal quarters because of seasonality.
Bottom line: The spin-off gives MSG Rangers a clean standalone identity, but its first report exposes a cost-heavy business with much wider losses and heavy cash use. Relative to the reasonable expectation of a stable carve-out transition, this is a modestly negative first read.

Fiscal second-quarter earnings, likely February 2027
