TDS earnings miss as fiber build forces Telecom guidance cut

Miss — Q3 revenue $306.7M vs ~$309.3M consensus; adjusted OIBDA $63.5M vs ~$78.6M consensus

TDS earnings show solid fiber additions but weaker Telecom profitability, higher capex, and a meaningful 2026 guidance cut.

TDS is in the middle of a capital-heavy shift from legacy telecom toward fiber broadband, while Array is being run as a standalone tower and infrastructure business after the wireless-operations sale. TDS had recently raised its fiber service-address and capital-spending plans, so this quarter matters mainly because it tests whether that growth is translating into profitable execution.

The earnings miss is concentrated in the operating businesses, not the headline GAAP profit. Third-quarter revenue was $306.7 million versus $308.5 million a year earlier, while diluted EPS from continuing operations fell to $0.26 from $0.33. The published estimates point to a modest revenue shortfall and a larger adjusted-OIBDA shortfall, with TDS Telecom adjusted OIBDA of $63.5 million versus an estimated roughly $78.6 million. The result is weaker than the market's operating benchmark even though Array's spectrum-related gains keep consolidated GAAP earnings positive.

Fiber execution is real, but the economics are arriving later than the spending. TDS added 16,700 residential fiber customers in the quarter, up from 11,200 a year earlier, and expanded its marketable fiber footprint by approximately 76,000 addresses. 〔0〕 Fiber connections are growing across both incumbent and expansion markets, but total Telecom revenue still declined 3% year over year and the segment posted a $17.5 million operating loss. The business is therefore advancing strategically while underperforming financially in the near term.

The guidance cut is the filing's clearest negative signal. TDS Telecom reduced full-year revenue guidance from $1.00-$1.025 billion to $990 million-$1.01 billion, cut adjusted OIBDA from $300-$320 million to $280-$300 million, and cut adjusted EBITDA from $310-$330 million to $290-$310 million. At the same time, expected capital expenditures rose from $625-$675 million to approximately $750 million. That combination says the company is spending more to build the fiber footprint while expecting less near-term operating payoff.

Array is stable enough to cushion the miss, but not enough to reverse it. Array left its full-year revenue, adjusted EBITDA, adjusted OIBDA, and capital-expenditure outlook unchanged. Its quarter included 4,372 colocations versus 4,362 in the prior quarter, while site-rental revenue grew 14% year over year. However, Array's reported earnings remain heavily shaped by license sales, investment income, and other non-operating items rather than by recurring tower operating cash flow; adjusted free cash flow from continuing operations was negative $162.0 million through nine months.

Cash has improved from asset monetization, but the core businesses are consuming it. TDS ended September with $1.64 billion of cash after receiving $2.19 billion from divestitures, yet continuing-operations free cash flow was negative $472.8 million through nine months versus negative $38.7 million a year earlier. The company also repurchased nearly 15 million shares in 2026 and says it has returned over $520 million to shareholders. That capital return is supported by the post-divestiture balance sheet, but it competes with a materially larger fiber investment program.

Bottom line: TDS is building the fiber business successfully, but this quarter shows the build is costing more and producing less near-term profit than expected. The guidance cut and sharply higher capex outweigh the healthy customer additions, making this a clear setback to the current operating story rather than a routine earnings update.
