Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. (MSGS) · Nov 6, 2026 · Earnings
Miss — Diluted EPS $(1.29) vs approximately $(0.78) published consensus
MSG Sports earnings show stronger revenue after the Rangers spin-off, but a deeper EPS loss and heavy cash burn complicate the Knicks-only story.
MSG Sports is now being reshaped into a Knicks-focused public company: the Rangers spin-off was approved for an October 26, 2026 completion, and the new entity is intended to contain the Knicks and Westchester Knicks. That separation was already expected before this release, so the quarter matters mainly for whether the underlying Knicks business is improving and how much financial strain the reset creates.
The operating business improved, but not enough to clear the earnings bar. Revenue rose 15% to $45.5 million, helped by league distributions and higher food, beverage and merchandise sales, including championship-driven Knicks merchandise. Adjusted operating loss narrowed only 4% to $20.0 million, while diluted EPS of $(1.29) was worse than the approximately $(0.78) published estimate. The result is therefore a headline earnings miss despite healthier top-line momentum.
| Figure | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Consensus / prior quarter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $45.5M (+15%) | $39.5M | |
| Adjusted operating loss (Adjusted operating loss reconciliation) | $(20.0)M (+4%) | $(20.8)M | |
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $(1.29) | $(0.37) | $(0.78) consensus |
| Operating cash flow (Cash Flow statement) | $(146.3)M | $(85.0)M | |
| Cash and equivalents (Balance Sheet) | $40.0M | $57.3M | $164.5M June 30, 2026 |
The cash profile is the bigger complication. Operating cash usage widened to $146.3 million from $85.0 million a year earlier, and cash fell to $40.0 million from $164.5 million at June 30. Some of the quarter reflects the separation mechanics and working-capital timing, but the filing still leaves the newly standalone Knicks company with far less liquidity and higher long-term debt than at the prior fiscal year-end.
The quarter is not yet a clean test of the Knicks-only model. Because the Rangers spin-off closed on October 26, the reported September quarter still includes the Rangers business; the next quarter should provide the first cleaner read on the economics of the separated Knicks company. That makes the revenue growth encouraging, but limits how much of the improvement can be attributed to the post-spin structure. 〔0〕
Bottom line: This is a mixed reset quarter that leans negative: operating revenue improved, but the EPS miss and sharply heavier cash burn outweigh the modest margin progress. The real test moves to the first fully Knicks-only quarter, not this transitional report.
