Beat — Adjusted EPS $1.33 vs ~$1.13 consensus
Sylvamo’s third-quarter earnings beat consensus on adjusted EPS, while a planned Europe sale, weaker EBITDA and softer free cash flow reshape the story.
Sylvamo is in a transition year: it is concentrating on its Latin America and North America paper operations, investing in Eastover capacity, and preparing to separate its European business. The quarter improves sequentially, but the underlying operation remains below last year’s level. The Europe transaction was partly known as a strategic objective; the new information is the binding put-option structure and a targeted first-quarter 2027 closing.
The continuing business beat the published adjusted-EPS bar, but mostly through a cleaner tax and special-item bridge. Adjusted operating EPS was $1.33 versus a published consensus near $1.13, making this an earnings beat. However, adjusted operating earnings fell from $1.79 a year ago, and the quarter benefited from a $33 million after-tax special-item benefit plus a $36 million tax benefit tied to European subsidiaries.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted operating EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation) | $1.33 | $1.79 | $1.13 |
| Net sales from continuing operations (Financial Highlights) | $645M (-2.6%) | $662M | ~$818M |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation) | $128M (-19.0%) | $158M | |
| Free cash flow (Free Cash Flow) | $16M (-75.0%) | $64M | |
| Business segment operating profit (Segment results) | $87M (-23.0%) | $113M | |
| Discontinued operations loss (Income Statement) | $(284)M | $(14)M |
Operationally, the rebound from the second quarter is real but not a return to last year’s earnings power. Latin America moved from an $18 million operating loss in the second quarter to $22 million of profit, while North America improved to $65 million; lower outages, better price and mix, and lower operating costs helped both segments. Yet combined segment profit was still 23% below the prior-year quarter, with higher input and transportation costs and lower North American volumes offsetting the improvement. 〔0〕
The Europe sale simplifies the company, but it also confirms that the European business was a material drag. Sylvamo recorded a $342 million impairment charge against Europe and is now pursuing a transaction that would leave it focused on Latin America and North America. That could sharpen capital allocation and reduce exposure to the weaker segment, but the filing does not disclose sale proceeds, purchase price, or debt-retirement terms, so the financial benefit is not yet quantifiable. 〔1〕
The reinvestment story remains intact, though near-term cash conversion is under pressure. Sylvamo is continuing its Eastover projects and chose to add rather than replace a cutsize sheeter, creating roughly 200,000 short tons of future converting capacity with startup expected in the third quarter of 2027. But nine-month free cash flow was negative $15 million versus positive $98 million a year earlier as capital spending rose and operating cash flow fell. 〔2〕
Bottom line: This is a narrow earnings beat, not a broad operating inflection. The Europe exit makes the business more focused, but weaker year-over-year profit and cash generation keep the overall read mixed rather than clearly positive.
