Beat — Adjusted EPS $1.30 vs ~$0.94 consensus
Mattel’s Q3 earnings beat on EPS, but tariff refunds drove much of the margin lift while Barbie and Fisher-Price remained weak.
Mattel is implementing a new brand-centric strategy built around stronger toy franchises, entertainment, digital games, and tighter integration across its commercial operations; the full acquisition of Mattel163 is part of that expansion, while Roger Lynch has just succeeded Ynon Kreiz as CEO. The quarter beat the published earnings bar, but not because the whole business suddenly accelerated. Adjusted EPS was $1.30 versus a published consensus near $0.94, while revenue was roughly $1.807 billion against expectations around $1.8 billion. The EPS outperformance was real, but the main driver was a one-time $88 million tariff refund rather than a broad demand surge. Mattel said, “Reported Gross Margin was 54.8%, versus 50.0% in the prior year’s third quarter, and Adjusted Gross Margin was 55.0%, versus 50.2%.” 〔0〕
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $1,806.7M ( +4%) | $1,736.0M | ~$1.8B |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (EPS reconciliation) | $1.30 ( +43%) | $0.91 | ~$0.94 |
| Adjusted gross margin (Gross Profit reconciliation) | 55.0% ( +480 bps) | 50.2% | |
| Adjusted operating income (Operating Income reconciliation) | $501.6M ( +27%) | $395.2M | |
| Worldwide gross billings (Category results) | $2,054.6M ( +4%) | $1,966.8M |
Underlying demand was mixed, not uniformly strong. Vehicles and the broader action-figures, games, and building-sets category carried the quarter, with gross billings up 9% and 12%, respectively. Mattel said, “Gross Billings for Action Figures, Building Sets, Games, and Other were $451million, up 12% as reported, or 11% in constant currency, primarily driven by growth in Games (including the contribution of Mattel163) and Action Figures.” But Barbie fell 9% and Fisher-Price fell 14%, while infant, toddler, and preschool billings declined 16%. Dolls still grew 4%, though Mattel attributed that mainly to partner brands and KPop Demon Hunters, “mainly offset by a decline in Barbie.”
The full-year story was not upgraded. Mattel kept its existing 2026 outlook rather than converting the quarterly beat into higher expectations; that guidance already called for 3%-6% constant-currency sales growth, roughly 50% adjusted gross margin, $580M-$630M of adjusted operating income, and $1.27-$1.39 of adjusted EPS. That makes the quarterly EPS result better than expected, but less transformative: nine-month adjusted EPS remained $1.08, flat with the prior year, and trailing adjusted EBITDA fell 9% while leverage rose to 2.7x from 2.5x.
The leadership reshuffle reinforces execution focus but adds transition risk. Mattel is creating a President and COO role for longtime commercial executive Steve Totzke, bringing brands, sales, commercial operations, and consumer products together under one veteran operator; Roberto Stanichi is leaving as chief marketing and brand officer. The filing says, “Mattel has appointed Steve Totzke as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company, effective November 11, 2026.” 〔1〕 This is strategically consistent with Lynch’s stated push for sharper execution, but it does not yet prove that the new structure can reverse weakness in Barbie, Fisher-Price, or the preschool business.
Bottom line: Mattel delivered a clear EPS beat, but the quality of the beat is mixed because tariff refunds supplied much of the margin lift and full-year guidance stayed unchanged. The business is progressing in vehicles, games, and digital, while several flagship brands remain under pressure and the new leadership model still has to prove itself. ბოლო
