Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $0.97 vs. ~$0.94 consensus; revenue $1.622B vs. ~$1.61B
Microchip’s earnings topped its Q2 targets, with strong bookings and data-center design wins supporting a broad semiconductor recovery.
Microchip entered this report in the early stages of a broad semiconductor recovery, with industrial and data-center demand already driving its fiscal 2027 rebound. Its prior quarter had also exceeded guidance, so the recovery itself was known; the question was whether execution could keep running ahead of the company’s targets.
The quarter was a narrow earnings beat, not a surprise reset. Non-GAAP EPS was $0.97 versus published consensus of roughly $0.94, while revenue was $1.622 billion versus roughly $1.61 billion. That puts the result modestly ahead of expectations, but not far enough above them to rewrite the operating story. The company also finished slightly above its prior revenue and EPS guidance ranges.
| Metric | Q2 FY2027 | Q2 FY2026 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $1,621.5M (+42.2%) | $1,140.4M | ~$1,610M |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $0.97 | $0.35 | ~$0.94 |
| Non-GAAP gross margin (Financial Highlights) | 66.5% | 56.7% | |
| Free cash flow (Cash Flow statement) | $396.1M | $51.6M |
The more important signal is that demand appears to be broadening beyond a simple inventory rebound. Management says bookings remained well above one and specifically reports PCIe Gen6 switch and retimer design wins rising to 24 from 12 at the end of June. That supports the company’s effort to build a larger data-center and intelligent-edge position, although design wins still represent future revenue rather than current sales. 〔0〕 〔1〕
Profitability and cash generation improved sharply as revenue recovered. Non-GAAP gross margin reached 66.5%, up from 56.7% a year ago, while non-GAAP operating expenses grew much more slowly than sales. Free cash flow rose to $396.1 million from $51.6 million, giving Microchip more room to fund targeted capacity and product investments without returning to aggressive factory expansion. The quality of the improvement is still partly helped by operating leverage and the exclusion of acquisition-related costs from non-GAAP results.
The next-quarter guide preserves the recovery but acknowledges seasonality and supply constraints. December revenue is guided to a midpoint of $1.606 billion, down 1% sequentially, but management says that is 5% to 7% better than normal seasonality after adjusting for roughly $53 million of nonrecurring September revenue. Longer lead times and the need to secure more wafer allocation show that demand is now pressing against supply in parts of the chain. 〔2〕
Bottom line: Microchip is executing slightly ahead of expectations while its recovery broadens into data-center applications. It is a healthy continuation of the turnaround, but the beat is narrow and does not yet overturn the existing story.```
