Beat — Adjusted EPS $1.89 vs ~$1.83 consensus
Nelnet earnings narrowly topped the published EPS bar, while higher loan-loss provisions and legacy FFELP runoff kept the quarter mixed.
Nelnet is a diversified education-finance and technology company trying to replace runoff in its legacy FFELP student-loan portfolio with consumer lending, bank growth, loan servicing, and education software. The Pay Later strategy and the NDS Canada expansion were already part of that transition before this report.
The quarter cleared the earnings bar, but only narrowly. Adjusted EPS was $1.89 versus a published consensus of roughly $1.83, a modest beat. GAAP EPS was $2.13, but the cleaner operating comparison is the company’s $1.89 figure excluding derivative valuation effects.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS (Non-GAAP Disclosures) | $1.89 | $2.95 | ~$1.83 |
| GAAP EPS (Income Statement) | $2.13 | $2.94 | |
| AGM net interest income (AGM results) | $65.2M | $44.7M | |
| AGM loan-loss provision (AGM results) | $34.5M | $(7.4)M | |
| Loan servicing revenue (Segment results) | $139.8M | $151.1M | |
| Education technology revenue (Segment results) | $132.9M | $129.3M |
The core lending pivot is producing growth, but with a much higher cost of risk. AGM net interest income rose to $65.2 million as consumer-loan balances and spreads grew, while the average FFELP portfolio continued shrinking from $8.25 billion to $6.46 billion. But AGM recorded a $34.5 million loan-loss provision versus a $7.4 million negative provision last year, making the apparent earnings growth less powerful than the headline operating gains.
Diversification is advancing, but the mature servicing business is not yet accelerating. Consumer-loan purchases jumped to $3.23 billion in the quarter, and the consumer portfolio reached $1.30 billion, while Nelnet Bank’s net interest income also increased. The education-technology segment grew modestly and improved revenue less direct costs, but reported loan-servicing revenue fell because last year included much larger Department of Education contract-modification revenue; excluding that distortion, management says the segment grew, helped by NDS Canada.
Capital returns add support, not a new operating catalyst. Nelnet repurchased $53.1 million of shares during the quarter and declared a $0.36 quarterly dividend. Those actions reinforce shareholder distributions, but they do not change the underlying earnings picture, which still depends on whether newer consumer lending can offset FFELP runoff without a further rise in credit costs.
Bottom line: Nelnet beat a low earnings bar, but the quality of the quarter was mixed: the consumer-lending transition is gaining scale while heavier provisions and legacy runoff limit the improvement. This advances the diversification story, but not decisively enough to rewrite it.
