Miss — Diluted EPS $0.23 vs ~$0.35 consensus; revenue $239.6M vs ~$251.9M
NerdWallet’s Q3 earnings missed consensus on revenue and EPS, while heavier investment compressed margins and forced a lower 2026 profit outlook.
NerdWallet is trying to turn its personal-finance comparison platform into a broader, more integrated consumer-finance marketplace, investing heavily in owned audiences while expanding student loans, personal loans, deposits and SMB products. That strategy was already visible before this report: management described 2026 as an investment year, with organic-search pressure weighing on parts of the business and a multi-year payoff expected from vertical integration.
The quarter missed the market’s bar on both growth and earnings. Revenue reached $239.6 million, below the published consensus of roughly $251.9 million, while diluted EPS was $0.23 versus about $0.35 expected. The miss is meaningful because revenue was also below NerdWallet’s own Q3 guide of $244 million to $260 million, and GAAP operating income of $19.4 million fell short of the company’s $22 million to $30 million target.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $239.6M (-4.9% vs consensus) | $215.1M | ~$251.9M consensus |
| Diluted EPS (Summary Financial Results) | $0.23 (-32% YoY) | $0.34 | ~$0.35 consensus |
| GAAP operating income (Financial Highlights) | $19.4M (-44% YoY) | $34.4M | $22M-$30M guide |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $39.8M (-26% YoY) | $53.6M | $39M-$47M guide |
| FY26 GAAP operating income (Financial Outlook) | $56M-$62M | — | $65M-$80M prior guide |
| FY26 adjusted EBITDA (Financial Outlook) | $127M-$133M | — | $131M-$147M prior guide |
The core issue is not demand everywhere; it is the cost and quality of that growth. Consumer revenue rose 12%, helped by student loans, personal loans and deposits, but auto-insurance revenue fell $17.4 million because of lower lead volume. At the same time, sales and marketing expense increased 28% against 11% revenue growth, pulling operating margin down to 8% from 16%.
Management is now acknowledging that the investment ramp will produce less near-term profit than previously expected. The full-year GAAP operating-income range was reduced from $65 million-$80 million to $56 million-$62 million, while adjusted EBITDA guidance fell from $131 million-$147 million to $127 million-$133 million. This is more than a routine reset: Q3 EBITDA landed only just above the bottom of the company’s own range, and the revised annual outlook implies the earlier investment thesis is taking longer or costing more to convert into earnings.
Cash generation remains a genuine offset, but capital allocation makes the balance-sheet signal less clean. Nine-month operating cash flow rose to $108.1 million and adjusted free cash flow reached $129.1 million, yet cash fell to $73.5 million after $99.3 million of share repurchases and $21.2 million spent on acquisitions. That does not create an immediate funding problem, but it leaves less cash cushion while NerdWallet is still funding elevated investment and integrating College Finance.
Bottom line: NerdWallet is still growing, especially in student and personal loans, but this quarter shows the growth engine is arriving with weaker margins than expected. The guidance cut makes the investment story materially less compelling in the near term, so this is a clear earnings and outlook setback rather than merely a noisy quarter.
