Miss — GAAP EPS $(0.02) vs ~$0.18 consensus; sales $88.9M vs ~$90.88M
Kura Sushi’s earnings missed expectations as traffic fell sharply and margins weakened, though FY27 sales growth and new-store expansion remain ambitious.
Kura Sushi is still in aggressive U.S. expansion mode: it grew from 79 restaurants at fiscal 2025 year-end to 95 at fiscal 2026 year-end, using its technology-enabled revolving-sushi model to build a national footprint. Its prior FY26 plan called for 16 new restaurants and $330.5 million-$331.5 million of sales, while the market expected roughly $90.88 million of Q4 revenue and $0.18 of EPS.
The quarter missed the market’s bar, not just last year’s numbers. Q4 sales rose 11.9% year over year, but came in below the published consensus, while GAAP EPS of $(0.02) fell far short of the roughly $0.18 expectation. The underlying problem was traffic: comparable sales fell 5.7%, driven by an 11.5% traffic decline that price increases could not offset. 〔0〕

Store-level economics held up better than the headline earnings. Labor costs improved to 30.4% of sales from 31.1%, helping keep restaurant-level operating profit at $17.0 million despite weaker traffic and tariff pressure. Adjusted EBITDA also edged higher year over year, but the margin fell to 8.7% from 9.3%, and a $1.2 million impairment helped push GAAP operating results into the red.
The full-year picture shows growth increasingly depends on new units rather than existing-store momentum. FY26 sales rose to $328.3 million, but missed the company’s prior $330.5 million-$331.5 million guidance range; comparable sales declined 0.4%, AUV fell to $3.8 million from $3.9 million, and adjusted net income swung to a $2.0 million loss from $0.4 million of income.
Management is still funding an ambitious expansion despite the demand weakness. FY27 calls for $376 million-$381 million of sales, 17 new restaurants, approximately $2.6 million of net capital spending per unit, and roughly 19.0% restaurant-level margins. That preserves the growth story, but it also raises the execution burden because existing restaurants are losing traffic while the company adds locations and carries higher occupancy, depreciation, and development costs.
Bottom line: This was a clear earnings miss driven by weak customer traffic and worsening corporate profitability, partially cushioned by labor productivity and continued unit growth. The FY27 plan keeps the expansion narrative alive, but the business is becoming more dependent on new restaurants to overcome pressure in the existing base.
