HASI earnings beat as recurring income grows, leverage costs rise

Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.82 vs ~$0.73 consensus

HASI’s Q3 earnings beat consensus and recurring income climbed, while higher leverage, financing costs and a troubled project temper the upside.

HASI is scaling a sustainable-infrastructure investment platform through direct assets, co-investment vehicles and securitizations; after raising its 2028 Adjusted EPS outlook to $3.55–$3.65 in Q2, the central question was whether that growth plan was converting into recurring earnings.

The quarter cleared the earnings bar. Adjusted EPS was $0.82 versus the published consensus of roughly $0.73–$0.74, while revenue was $114.5 million against roughly $110.7 million expected.

Q3 2026Q3 2025Consensus
Adjusted EPS (Adjusted Earnings)$0.82$0.80~$0.73
Total revenue (Income Statement)$114.5M$103.1M~$110.7M
Adjusted Recurring Net Investment Income (Financial Highlights)$121.3M$105.1M
Weighted-average interest cost (Debt discussion)6.2%5.9%

The underlying engine is still expanding. Adjusted Recurring Net Investment Income rose 15% year over year, while Managed Assets reached $19.0 billion, up 27% from a year earlier. The portfolio also closed approximately $1.1 billion of new transactions in the quarter, with new investments underwritten at yields above 11% through the first three quarters. “Adjusted Recurring Net Investment Income was $121million in Q3 2026, up 15% from $105million in Q3 2025.”

The beat was not entirely clean. Q3 recurring income included a $35 million unrealized gain on a solar asset-servicing investment, while HASI also recognized a $21 million economic loss on a project company taken over in Q2. The company said remediation costs were higher than expected and moved those assets into its weakest performance category. “Adjusted Recurring Net Investment Income in Q3 2026 included a $35million unrealized gain related to an investment in a solar asset servicing platform, for which we had elected the fair value option.” “Accordingly, in the third quarter of 2026, we moved these assets to Category 3.” 〔0〕

Growth is requiring more expensive financing. Total debt rose to $6.5 billion from $5.2 billion a year earlier, and the weighted-average interest cost increased to 6.2% from 5.9%. Leverage remained within management’s target range at 1.8x, but the higher funding burden is an important offset to the strong asset-growth numbers. “As of September 30, 2026, our total debt outstanding was $6.5billion, as compared to $5.2billion as of September 30, 2025.”

The outlook was maintained, not upgraded. HASI reaffirmed its already-raised 2028 Adjusted EPS and ROE targets and again indicated minimal ATM issuance in 2026. That supports execution, but it adds little new information beyond confirming that Q3 did not force a reset.

Bottom line: HASI delivered a genuine quarterly earnings beat and continued to scale its recurring-income platform. The result advances the existing growth story, but unrealized gains, a troubled project and rising financing costs keep this from being a decisive upgrade to the overall business view.
