El Pollo Loco Holdings, Inc. (LOCO) · Nov 5, 2026 · Earnings
In line — Adjusted EPS $0.24 vs ~$0.24 consensus
El Pollo Loco earnings show improving traffic and restaurant margins, but adjusted EPS and EBITDA slipped year over year as corporate costs rose.
El Pollo Loco is in a traffic-recovery and expansion phase: the 500-plus-unit chain has been rebuilding comparable sales while leaning on franchise growth and debt reduction. Its second-quarter update had already shown 3.9% systemwide comparable-sales growth and a raised 2026 outlook, so this quarter mainly tests whether that momentum is holding rather than introducing a new strategy.

The core restaurant business improved, but the quarter was not a clean earnings beat. Systemwide comparable sales rose 5.0%, with company-operated comparable revenue up 4.4% and transactions up 0.3%, marking a better traffic signal than the prior quarter. The filing says, "System-wide comparable restaurant sales(1) increased by 5.0%." 〔0〕 Restaurant contribution margin also edged up to 18.4% from 18.3%, despite higher utilities, repairs, maintenance and delivery fees.
Corporate costs absorbed the operating progress. General and administrative expense rose 13.1%, driven by incentive compensation, stock compensation, restructuring and other overhead. That left operating income at $10.2 million versus $11.5 million last year, while adjusted EPS fell to $0.24 from $0.27 and adjusted EBITDA slipped to $17.1 million from $17.4 million. The adjusted EPS was roughly in line with the published consensus near $0.24, but revenue was slightly below the roughly $126.8 million expectation, so the result is better characterized as in line than as a beat.
The outlook is steady, not upgraded. El Pollo Loco updated its 2026 same-store sales, G&A and capital-spending assumptions while reiterating the $68 million–$70 million adjusted EBITDA target and existing store-opening plans. That preserves the current operating story, but does not raise the bar after a quarter where profit declined. The company also introduced a 2027 target of 25–30 new restaurants, extending the expansion narrative without yet providing the financial contribution those stores will generate.
Debt reduction is a real balance-sheet improvement, but liquidity is tighter after the quarter. Debt fell to $23.0 million at September 30 from $51.0 million at year-end, but the company subsequently borrowed $4.0 million, bringing borrowings to $27.0 million as of November 4. That does not overturn the story, but it limits how much of the operating improvement can immediately fund expansion.
Bottom line: The business is moving in the right direction on traffic and restaurant-level margins, but higher overhead kept earnings below last year and the forecast unchanged. This is a mildly constructive operating update, not a material reset of expectations.
