Beat — NII/share $0.54 vs ~$0.51 consensus
Fidus Investment’s Q3 earnings beat consensus and supported a $0.54 dividend, but larger realized losses pushed NAV lower.
Fidus is a business development company financing lower-middle-market businesses through debt and equity investments; this quarter’s story is still primarily one of income generation, portfolio growth, and funding capacity rather than a change in strategy.
Underlying earnings beat the market’s bar. Net investment income was $0.54 per share, ahead of the published consensus near $0.51, while adjusted net investment income rose 8% year over year to $0.54 per share. That growth came from a 26.9% increase in interest income and a 125.9% jump in fee income, although expenses rose faster than revenue in percentage terms as borrowing costs and management fees increased.

| Q4 dividend/share (Dividend declaration) | $0.54 | $0.50 paid | — |
The income engine is covering the base dividend, but credit outcomes were less clean. Adjusted net investment income of $0.54 per share covered the $0.43 base dividend and supported a $0.11 supplemental dividend for the fourth quarter. However, realized losses widened sharply to $10.9 million from $1.4 million a year earlier, leaving total net investment income from operations at $0.52 per share after investment losses and debt-extinguishment costs.
Portfolio capacity expanded, but leverage and dilution remain part of the growth model. Investments at fair value reached $1.4 billion, while the company raised $35.5 million through its at-the-market program and ended the quarter with $132.8 million of unused SPV capacity. That helped fund new investments, but shares outstanding increased to 39.8 million from 38.0 million at year-end, and NAV per share declined to $19.47 from $19.55 despite higher total net assets.
The dividend declaration is supportive but not a new strategic signal. The $0.43 base dividend was maintained and the $0.11 supplemental dividend lifts the declared fourth-quarter payout to $0.54 per share, payable December 29, 2026. The filing also shows $37.7 million of estimated spillover income, giving the company some distribution flexibility, but final 2026 tax attributes remain unresolved.
Bottom line: This was a modest earnings beat with healthy recurring income and dividend coverage, but the wider realized loss and lower NAV keep it from being a clean positive quarter. The business remains on track, though the credit-loss signal deserves more attention than management’s upbeat framing suggests.
