Miss — Diluted EPS -$0.18 vs ~$-0.12 consensus; gross margin 48.5% vs 53%-55% guide
GSI Technology earnings showed an AI roadmap still advancing, but a sharp gross-margin miss, wider losses and lower Q3 revenue guidance.
GSI Technology is trying to transition from a cyclical SRAM supplier into an edge-AI platform built around Gemini-II and the still-in-development Plato processor; its AI products have not yet produced material revenue, so the transition remains funded by the legacy memory business.
The quarter missed on both earnings and the quality of revenue. Revenue was only modestly below the published consensus of roughly $6.25 million, but diluted EPS was materially worse at $0.18 of loss versus consensus near $0.12 of loss. Revenue was within management’s own range, but gross margin collapsed to 48.5% from 54.8% a year earlier and landed well below the company’s 53%-55% target. 〔0〕

The main problem is manufacturing economics, not just one-time spending. Supply constraints for wafers and outsourced assembly drove costs higher, while product mix also hurt margins. Management plans price increases for new orders immediately and existing backlog beginning January 1, 2027, but the near-term outlook implies another sharp margin decline before any recovery. 〔1〕
Operating investment is advancing the AI roadmap, but it is widening the funding gap. R&D rose to $6.0 million from $3.8 million as Plato design work continues, while SG&A included roughly $1.4 million of net non-routine legal and professional costs tied to a completed vendor assessment. The latter should ease, but Plato spending continues through the March 2027 tape-out, leaving the company dependent on its cash balance while commercial AI revenue remains unproven.
The strategic milestones are real, but they do not yet offset the operating deterioration. Smart Guardian Eye has reached live monitoring after acceptance of the initial Phase I stage, the AI-assisted SDK is targeted for customer beta testing by the end of December 2026, and Plato remains scheduled for tape-out in March 2027. 〔2〕 Those developments preserve the longer-term commercialization story, but they are still milestones and proof points rather than recurring product revenue.
Bottom line: The AI buildout is progressing, but this quarter shows the legacy business absorbing higher costs faster than the new products are monetizing. That makes the earnings miss and the much weaker near-term margin outlook the dominant change to the story.
