MP Materials earnings beat revenue bar as GM magnets begin

Miss — Revenue $147.7M vs ~$117.4M consensus; GAAP EPS -$0.12 vs ~-$0.02

MP Materials’ Q3 earnings brought a major revenue beat and GM magnet qualification, but GAAP losses remained wider than expected.

MP Materials is transitioning from a rare-earth miner and processor into a vertically integrated U.S. magnet supplier, with its Fort Worth Independence facility ramping production for customers such as GM. The strategic direction was already known: the company had previously targeted GM magnet sales during 2026, while its broader story centers on building domestic separation, metal, and finished-magnet capacity.

The quarter materially beat the revenue bar, but missed on GAAP earnings. Revenue reached $147.7 million versus published expectations around $117.4 million, helped by higher NdPr sales, pricing, and a $31.6 million SEG+ sale to a U.S. aerospace and defense customer. But GAAP diluted loss was $0.12 per share versus roughly $0.02 expected, so the clean earnings verdict is a miss despite the top-line beat.

The more important business milestone is operational, not accounting. MP completed GM’s qualification process and said saleable magnet deliveries and revenue would begin in the fourth quarter, moving the Independence facility from commissioning toward customer-backed commercial production. The filing states, “Most importantly, we completed the GM qualification process, with saleable magnet deliveries and revenue beginning in the fourth quarter.” 〔0〕

Underlying Materials execution improved sharply, while Magnetics is still in transition. Materials revenue rose 322% to $133.5 million, NdPr sales volume nearly doubled to 1,020 metric tons, and Materials segment adjusted EBITDA reached $47.8 million versus a loss the year before. That progress was partly offset by Magnetics revenue falling 15% to $18.6 million and segment adjusted EBITDA dropping 44% to $5.3 million as the company shifted from precursor products toward finished-magnet production. The filing says, “The increase was partially offset by slightly lower revenue from magnetic precursor products due to the start-up of magnetics production at Independence.” 〔1〕

The buildout is consuming substantial capital, even though liquidity remains meaningful. MP spent $420.3 million on property, plant and equipment through nine months, while operating cash flow was still negative $7.8 million. Total cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments stood at $1.34 billion at September 30, down from $1.83 billion at year-end. That does not signal an immediate funding shortfall, but it shows the magnet and downstream expansion is far from self-funding.

Bottom line: This was a strategically important quarter because GM qualification makes finished-magnet revenue tangible, and the revenue beat confirms strong Materials momentum. But the earnings miss, continued cash investment, and weaker Magnetics results make this an advancing business story rather than a clean financial beat.
