Miss — Diluted EPS $0.07 vs ~$0.10 consensus
MDU Resources earnings showed stronger electric utility results, but pipeline weakness and project costs pulled EPS below consensus.
MDU Resources is now a regulated electric and natural-gas utility plus a pipeline operator, pursuing growth from rate recovery, large-load demand such as data centers, and the proposed Bakken East system. Earlier expectations already included a major Bakken East step-up and continued utility-led growth, so this quarter is mainly about execution against that plan.
The quarter missed the earnings bar despite a small revenue beat. Diluted EPS was $0.07 versus roughly $0.10 expected, while revenue of $347.8 million was modestly above the published consensus near $346 million. GAAP earnings also fell from $0.09 a year earlier, and adjusted EPS was $0.08 after excluding the Knott Landfill write-off and Bakken East advisory costs. The result is weaker than the market expected, even though the revenue line held up.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating revenue (Financial Highlights) | $347.8M (+10.4%) | $315.1M | ~$346M |
| Diluted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $0.07 | $0.09 | ~$0.10 |
| Adjusted diluted EPS (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $0.08 | $0.09 | |
| Electric net income (Electric segment results) | $26.5M (+23.6%) | $21.5M | |
| Natural gas distribution net income (Natural Gas Distribution segment results) | $(20.7)M | $(18.2)M | |
| Pipeline net income (Pipeline segment results) | $13.1M (-22.0%) | $16.8M |
Electric is the clear operating bright spot. Electric utility net income rose 23.6%, helped by $7.1 million of new rate revenue, $3.2 million from Badger Wind Farm, and higher retail volumes. That supports the existing utility-growth thesis, including potential demand from data centers, although some volume benefit came from warmer weather rather than solely structural demand.
The non-electric businesses absorbed the upside. Natural gas distribution posted a larger seasonal loss as higher operating and interest costs outweighed new rates and volume growth. Pipeline earnings declined 22% as operating costs, lower storage activity, rate-case consulting, and Bakken East advisory expenses pressured the quarter.
Bakken East advances the long-term story but does not help near-term earnings. The positive final investment decision was already announced on September 30, so the filing mostly confirms rather than introduces that milestone. The project now carries a narrower but still enormous $2.8 billion–$3.1 billion estimated investment, remains subject to regulatory approval, and is expected to enter service in phases in late 2029 and late 2030. Near term, it adds advisory costs and raises the capital burden; strategically, it gives MDU a larger infrastructure-growth platform. 〔0〕
Bottom line: This was a mixed operating quarter that lands slightly below expectations: electric execution is improving, but pipeline weakness, a deeper gas-distribution loss, and project-related costs kept earnings below the bar. The long-term growth plan advanced, but the quarter itself does not strengthen the story enough to offset the miss.
Bakken East FERC application, expected in Q4 2026
