MarketWise earnings beat as billings rebound, subscribers slip

Beat — Diluted EPS $0.53 vs ~$0.39 consensus

MarketWise earnings beat on EPS and revenue while billings surged 27%; the tradeoff was fewer paid subscribers and a planned shift toward cash generation.

MarketWise is midway through a deliberate pivot toward higher-priced products: it is trying to grow billings, average revenue per user, and customer value while using marketing spend as a switch between subscriber growth and cash generation. That strategy was already visible in the first-half results and prior guidance.

The quarter beat the published earnings bar, but the operational signal is mixed. Diluted EPS of $0.53 and revenue of $80.1 million exceeded published estimates of roughly $0.39 and $78.4 million, respectively.

The core sales engine is improving, but not through broader subscriber growth. Billings rose 26.8% year over year to $80.7 million, helped by new customer acquisition earlier in the year, stronger renewals, and higher-priced products. ARPU reached $860 versus $566 a year earlier, supporting the company’s claim that subscriber quality is improving.

The cost of that monetization strategy is a smaller paid base. Paid subscribers fell from 400,000 at June 30 to 389,000 at September 30 as management deliberately reduced marketing investment. The filing explicitly says similar declines could continue in Q4, so the near-term story is higher value per customer rather than accelerating customer count. 〔0〕

Cash generation recovered enough to keep the annual target intact, not enough to justify a new upgrade. Q3 CFFO increased to $7.8 million, and management reaffirmed its approximately $330 million billings target and $50 million CFFO target for FY 2026. With nine-month billings at $253.3 million, the billings goal requires roughly $76.7 million in Q4—achievable against the company’s current run rate, but dependent on a seasonally stronger cash-flow quarter.

The balance sheet remains a constraint beneath the earnings beat. Cash fell to $27.4 million from $70.1 million at year-end, largely because of tax distributions, dividends, and a $12.2 million legal-settlement payment. Total liabilities were $449.1 million against $185.4 million of assets, leaving a substantial stockholders’ deficit.

Bottom line: MarketWise delivered a genuine earnings beat and a strong billings rebound, but the improvement is being bought through monetization rather than expanding subscribers. That makes this a modest step forward in the turnaround, not a rewritten business story.
