Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.42 vs ~$0.23–$0.24 consensus
Centuri’s Q3 earnings beat expectations on revenue, adjusted EPS and margins, while bookings and 2027 coverage strengthen the growth story.
Centuri is a recently separated utility-infrastructure services company trying to scale across U.S. gas, electric and Canadian markets while proving that heavier workforce and capacity investment can convert strong utility demand into better margins. Its second-quarter setup was explicitly about absorbing that investment and reaching roughly 9% second-half gross margins.
The quarter materially beat the published bar. Pre-release estimates clustered around roughly $0.23–$0.24 of EPS and $1.03–$1.04 billion of revenue; Centuri delivered $0.42 of adjusted EPS and $1.192 billion of revenue.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Statements) | $1.192B (+40.2%) | $850.0M | ~$1.03–$1.04B |
| Adjusted EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation) | $0.42 (+121%) | $0.19 | ~$0.23–$0.24 |
| Gross profit margin (Segment results) | 9.5% | 9.2% | — |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $108.0M (+43.7%) | $75.2M | — |
| Net debt / Adjusted EBITDA (Leverage reconciliation) | 2.6x | 3.8x | — |
The important change is operational, not just volume. Revenue grew 40%, but gross profit grew faster at 45%, and adjusted EBITDA rose 44%; that is evidence the capacity and hiring investment discussed after Q2 is beginning to produce operating leverage. The headline 9.5% gross margin includes a $9.0 million City of Chicago reversal, so the cleaner underlying comparison is approximately 8.8% for the quarter—still a meaningful recovery from Q2’s 7.2% reported margin and close to the second-half margin objective.
Demand visibility also improved rather than merely holding up. Year-to-date bookings reached approximately $2.9 billion, backlog stood at approximately $6.2 billion, and the opportunity pipeline expanded to $19 billion, up 46% year over year. That supports the existing growth thesis, although the reported year-to-date book-to-bill ratio was only 1.01x; the full-year target above 1.2x still depends on the expected roughly $2 billion of MSA renewals before year-end.
The balance sheet is better than last year but cash conversion remains the softer spot. Net debt fell to $774.1 million from $928.5 million and leverage improved to 2.6x, yet operating cash flow was negative $42.6 million through nine months and cash declined to $43.4 million while the line of credit rose to $178.6 million. That does not overturn the quarter’s operating beat, but it means the growth is still consuming working capital as receivables and contract assets expand.
The filing extends the story into 2027 without formally resetting the 2026 financial guide. Management cites approximately $3.7 billion of 2027 revenue coverage, mid-teens expected revenue growth and a targeted 8.5%–9.0% gross margin range.
Bottom line: This is the quarter that validates Centuri’s margin-recovery strategy: it beat a low earnings bar while showing stronger profitability and demand visibility. The remaining proof point is whether bookings convert into cash and the margin improvement persists without relying on one-time adjustments.
Year-end MSA renewals, approximately $2 billion expected
