Beat — adj. EPS $1.94 vs ~$1.71 consensus
Southern Company’s Q3 earnings beat consensus, powered by stronger electricity demand and commercial growth, though higher costs and share dilution remain.
Southern Company is a regulated Southeast utility positioned to serve unusually fast electricity-load growth, especially from large commercial and industrial customers and data centers, while funding substantial generation and transmission investment. This quarter shows that demand is already translating into earnings, not just appearing in management’s narrative.
The quarter beat the market’s bar by a wide margin. Adjusted EPS was $1.94 versus a published consensus near $1.71, while revenue reached $8.843 billion versus roughly $8.4 billion expected. Reported EPS was $1.77, up from $1.55 a year earlier.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS (Net Income – Excluding Items) | $1.94 | $1.60 | ~$1.71 |
| Operating revenues (Consolidated Earnings) | $8,843M | $7,823M | ~$8,400M |
| Net income available to common (Financial Overview) | $2,046M | $1,711M | |
| Georgia Power net income (Financial Overview) | $1,523M | $1,248M |
The core utility business, especially Georgia Power, carried the result. Traditional electric operating companies contributed $2.272 billion of quarterly net income, up from $1.920 billion, while Georgia Power’s net income rose 22%. Retail sales increased 7.7% overall and 7.3% for commercial customers, with weather-adjusted total retail sales still up 3.5%. That matters because it supports the thesis that Southeast load growth is becoming an operating driver rather than merely a future capital-spending story. 〔0〕
The beat was not entirely clean or repeatable. Warmer weather helped the quarter, and higher non-fuel operating costs, interest expense, taxes and a 5% increase in average shares diluted the benefit at the per-share level. Southern Company also recorded $40 million after-tax of debt-extinguishment costs and $7 million after-tax tied to Nicor Gas investment disallowances. Southern Power improved sharply year over year in the quarter, but its nine-month net income remained far below 2025 levels.
The filing strengthens execution but does not reset the outlook. Management provided no new full-year earnings guidance in the release; the next major information point is the November 5 analyst call. Repowering charges will continue through projects projected to finish by the third quarter of 2027, with approximately $100 million of pre-tax costs still projected for 2026 and $135 million for 2027. 〔1〕
Bottom line: This is a clear earnings beat that validates stronger Southeast electricity demand and utility execution. It meaningfully advances the current story, although weather, cost pressure, ongoing repowering charges and share dilution keep it from being a complete business-model reset.
