Novavax earnings beat as Sanofi milestone lifts 2026 guide

Beat — Revenue $68.3M vs ~$54.2M consensus; diluted EPS -$0.19 vs ~-$0.34 consensus

Novavax earnings beat consensus and raised 2026 revenue guidance, led by a newly earned $125 million Sanofi milestone.

Novavax is shifting from a direct COVID-vaccine commercial model toward a partner-led business built around Sanofi royalties, Matrix-M licensing and a smaller, targeted R&D pipeline. Sanofi now leads commercialization in key markets, while Novavax is advancing C. difficile and broader Matrix-M applications.

The quarter beat a low market bar. Revenue reached $68.3 million versus published expectations around $54.2 million, while diluted EPS was a $0.19 loss versus consensus near a $0.34 loss. The beat was real, but it came with total revenue still down 3% year over year as licensing revenue declined sharply.

Q3 2026Q3 2025Consensus
Total revenue (Income Statement)$68.3M$70.4M~$54.2M
Diluted EPS (Income Statement)$(0.19)$(1.25)~$(0.34)
Combined R&D and SG&A guide (Guidance)$375-$395M$370-$410M prior guide
Adjusted total revenue guide (Guidance)$385-$415M$235-$275M prior guide

The more important change is the revenue framework, not the quarter itself. Novavax added a $125 million Sanofi CIC milestone after Sanofi initiated its European Phase 3 influenza-COVID trial, lifting the adjusted 2026 revenue range by $145 million at the midpoint. That materially improves the reported 2026 outlook, but much of the increase is a one-time milestone rather than a recurring product-revenue step-up.

Cost control is improving, though the underlying business remains loss-making. The company lowered the midpoint of its GAAP combined R&D and SG&A guide by $5 million while leaving non-GAAP spending guidance unchanged. Third-quarter R&D and SG&A fell substantially year over year as Sanofi assumed more commercial activity, but Novavax still posted a $31.4 million net loss and cash plus marketable securities declined from year-end. 〔0〕

The pipeline adds optionality, not near-term revenue. Sanofi’s stated intent to start a U.S. Phase 3 CIC trial in 2027 supports a possible future $225 million milestone, while C. difficile and oncology-related Matrix-M work remains developmental. These are meaningful extensions of the partner-led strategy, but neither changes current operating results yet. 〔1〕

Bottom line: This was a genuine earnings beat and a meaningful 2026 revenue-guide increase, but the biggest uplift comes from a one-time Sanofi milestone. The business is advancing toward a leaner, partner-funded model, not yet demonstrating durable standalone growth.
