Beat — NII $0.16/share vs ~$0.12 consensus
BlackRock TCP Capital’s earnings beat the published estimate, but a sharp NAV decline, rising non-accruals and uncovered dividend expose deeper portfolio stress.
TCPC is a middle-market direct lender trying to stabilize after a large portfolio sale that reduced leverage and opened a strategic review focused on reinvestment, buybacks, combinations or an orderly wind-down. That restructuring direction was already public before this filing.
The headline earnings number beat the published bar, but it is not the main story. GAAP net investment income was $0.16 per share versus an external consensus near $0.12, so the quarter cleared the income expectation. But adjusted income was only $0.15 per share, below the $0.17 quarterly dividend, and net investment income fell by roughly half from $0.32 a year earlier. The filing says, “Adjusted net investment income for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 was $12.5 million, or $0.15 per share on a diluted basis.”
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net investment income/share (Financial Highlights) | $0.16 | $0.32 | ~$0.12 consensus |
| Net assets from operations/share (Financial Highlights) | ($0.80) | $0.29 | $0.02 Q2 |
| NAV/share (Financial Highlights) | $5.61 | — | $6.58 Q2 |
| Non-accruals at fair value (Portfolio activity) | 3.4% | — | 1.6% Q2 |
| Net leverage (Financial Highlights) | 0.16x | — | 1.38x Q2 |
| Quarterly dividend (Recent developments) | $0.17 | — | $0.17 prior |
The balance-sheet repair worked, but it came with a very high price. Net leverage fell to 0.16x and liquidity reached $511.2 million, a meaningful improvement from the 1.38x leverage reported for the second quarter. However, the continuation-vehicle sale and other exits produced a $74.5 million realized investment loss, including a $63.7 million loss tied to that transaction. The filing states, “Net realized loss for the three months ended September 30, 2026 was comprised primarily of $63.7 million in losses from the Continuation Vehicle Transaction.”
Credit quality deteriorated sharply even as leverage improved. Non-accrual investments rose to 3.4% of portfolio fair value and 14.2% at cost, versus 1.6% and 7.4% three months earlier. NAV fell from $6.58 to $5.61 per share, while total net assets declined to $471.0 million. The filing says, “As of September 30, 2026, investments on non-accrual status represented 3.4% of the portfolio at fair value and 14.2% at cost.”
The dividend was maintained, but current earnings did not cover it. Keeping the $0.17 payout avoids an immediate distribution cut, yet GAAP income covered only $0.16 per share and adjusted income covered $0.15. That makes the dividend dependent on realized proceeds, balance-sheet flexibility or future portfolio income rather than this quarter’s recurring earnings alone. The filing confirms, “On November 5, 2026, our Board of Directors declared a fourth quarter dividend of $0.17 per share.”
Bottom line: TCPC beat the narrow income expectation, but the underlying business story weakened: deleveraging was achieved through heavy portfolio realization losses, credit stress increased and NAV fell materially. The filing improves financial flexibility without yet proving that the remaining portfolio can support the dividend or reverse the deterioration.
