Miss — GAAP EPS -$4.84 vs approximately -$1.66 consensus
Sphere Entertainment’s earnings show strong Sphere growth and better cash generation, but MSG Networks’ impairment and declining profits make the quarter mixed.
Sphere is proving out its Las Vegas venue while building a broader global network, including planned venues in Abu Dhabi and National Harbor; MSG Networks remains the shrinking legacy segment. The prior quarter already established the basic pattern—Sphere growth offset by pressure at Networks—so this filing is mainly about the magnitude of the split, not a new strategic direction.
Sphere execution is clearly improving. Sphere revenue rose 14% to $198.9 million, while segment adjusted operating income nearly doubled to $32.4 million. The gains came from 241 Wizard of Oz performances, higher sponsorship and Exosphere advertising revenue, and three additional concert-residency shows. The production’s continued ticket-sales momentum supports the central business case: a single venue can generate multiple revenue streams beyond concerts.
But the consolidated result is weaker than the headline Sphere growth suggests. Total revenue of $274.3 million exceeded the published consensus of roughly $269.7 million, but GAAP EPS of -$4.84 was far below the approximately -$1.66 expectation. The gap was driven by a $177.6 million non-cash goodwill impairment at MSG Networks, up from $98.8 million in the revised prior-year quarter.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue (Financial Highlights) | $274.3M (+4%) | $262.5M | ~$269.7M |
| Sphere revenue (Segment results — Sphere) | $198.9M (+14%) | $174.1M | |
| MSG Networks revenue (Segment results — MSG Networks) | $75.4M (-15%) | $88.4M | |
| Adjusted operating income (Financial Highlights) | $39.2M (+8%) | $36.4M | |
| Sphere adjusted operating income (Segment results — Sphere) | $32.4M (+90%) | $17.1M | |
| MSG Networks adjusted operating income (Segment results — MSG Networks) | $6.8M (-65%) | $19.3M | |
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $(4.84) | $(3.47) | ~$(1.66) |
| Goodwill (Balance Sheet) | $80.6M | $258.1M |
MSG Networks is now the main business problem. Its revenue fell 15%, adjusted operating income dropped 65%, and the impairment pushed the segment to a $173.6 million operating loss. That is more than an accounting blemish: the impairment and revised historical figures show that the carrying value and earning power of the Networks business have deteriorated materially.
Cash generation provides a useful offset, but not a clean turnaround. Operating cash flow for the first nine months rose to $159.5 million from $63.1 million, and cash ended at $527.3 million. Still, the company remains deeply loss-making under GAAP, with a nine-month net loss attributable to shareholders of $216.4 million, and the accumulated deficit expanded to $461.0 million.
Bottom line: The filing strengthens the case that Sphere itself is scaling, but the consolidated business is not yet cleanly improving because MSG Networks is contracting and taking larger impairments. Revenue beat expectations, yet the quarter lands as a miss overall because the Networks deterioration overwhelmed the operating progress at Sphere.
