McGraw Hill earnings miss revenue estimates as K-12 weakness persists

Beat — Adjusted diluted EPS $0.75 vs ~$0.73 estimate; revenue $632.2M vs ~$648.2M estimate

McGraw Hill’s earnings show digital and higher-education momentum, but K-12 weakness pushed revenue below estimates while FY2027 guidance held.

McGraw Hill is a post-IPO education-platform transition story: higher education is gaining share, digital and recurring revenue are replacing print, AI is being layered onto proprietary content, and debt reduction is meant to create room for investment. The current plan depends heavily on a K-12 recovery and a larger ELA adoption cycle beginning in fiscal 2028.

The quarter was operationally mixed, not a clean beat. Adjusted diluted EPS of $0.75 was narrowly above the published estimate of roughly $0.73, but revenue of $632.2 million trailed the roughly $648.2 million estimate. The filing itself calls revenue favorable to expectations, but that appears to refer to internal expectations rather than the published revenue estimate. The company also reported that adjusted EBITDA fell 12.5% year over year, with margin down to 39.6% from 42.8%.

MetricQ2 FY2027Q2 FY2026Estimate
Revenue (Financial Highlights)$632.2M (-5.5%)$669.2M~$648.2M
Adjusted diluted EPS (Adjusted net income reconciliation)$0.75$1.40~$0.73
Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights)$250.6M (-12.5%)$286.4M
Adjusted EBITDA margin (Financial Highlights)39.6% (-3.2 pts)42.8%
Digital revenue (Revenue by segment)$361.4M (+2.6%)$352.2M

The underlying mix is improving, but not yet fast enough to offset K-12. Digital revenue grew 2.6% and higher-education revenue rose 0.2%, while higher-education recurring revenue increased 5.5%. That supports the company’s subscription and platform strategy. But K-12 revenue fell 9.6%, and the filing identifies lower capture rates in select math markets as the main drag.

The growth thesis is still intact, but its payoff remains deferred. Recurring revenue grew 3.7% year to date, digital revenue grew 5.6% year to date, and remaining performance obligations increased to $1.79 billion from $1.67 billion at March 31. Those are constructive leading indicators, but the current quarter still shows a business relying on future K-12 adoption and fiscal 2028 ELA demand to convert that momentum into consolidated growth.

Debt reduction continues to help the financial profile, though leverage remains meaningful. McGraw Hill paid down $50 million of term debt during the quarter and reported net debt of $2.34 billion, or 3.2x LTM adjusted EBITDA. Lower interest expense helped pretax income rise despite weaker operating profit, but the balance sheet is still carrying substantial leverage while the company funds product development and acquisitions.

Guidance was reaffirmed rather than raised. Fiscal 2027 revenue remains guided to $2.115 billion-$2.175 billion, recurring revenue to $1.587 billion-$1.627 billion, and adjusted EBITDA to $750 million-$790 million. That removes a downside surprise, but with revenue below the published quarterly estimate and K-12 still contracting sharply, reaffirmation is support for the existing story—not evidence that the recovery has arrived early. 〔0〕

Bottom line: McGraw Hill is making real progress in digital, recurring revenue, higher education and AI, but this quarter still depends on a future K-12 recovery to complete the story. The modest adjusted-EPS beat is outweighed by a revenue miss and weaker adjusted EBITDA, leaving the overall read mixed with a slight positive lean.
