Appian earnings beat estimates, but quarterly cash flow turns negative

Beat — Non-GAAP diluted EPS $0.51 vs ~$0.33 consensus

Appian’s third-quarter earnings beat consensus by a wide margin, led by cloud subscriptions and profitability, but quarterly operating cash flow deteriorated sharply.

Appian is in the middle of shifting its enterprise process-automation business toward faster-growing cloud and AI-driven workflows for large companies and governments; recent company materials emphasize AI automation for mission-critical work and continued cloud expansion.

The quarter materially exceeded the operating bar. Total revenue reached $234.6 million, 8% above the published consensus of roughly $216.9 million, while non-GAAP diluted EPS of $0.51 was far above consensus near $0.33. The result also cleared Appian’s own Q3 ranges of $214–218 million in revenue and $0.31–$0.35 in non-GAAP EPS. Total revenue rose 25% year over year, versus the company’s prior 14%–17% outlook.

Q3 2026Q3 2025Consensus
Cloud subscriptions revenue (Revenue highlights)$136.4M (+20%)$113.7M
Total revenue (Income Statement)$234.6M (+25%)$187.0M$216.9M
Adjusted EBITDA (Adjusted EBITDA reconciliation)$43.4M (+35%)$32.2M
Non-GAAP diluted EPS (Non-GAAP reconciliation)$0.51 (+59%)$0.32~$0.33
GAAP operating income (Income Statement)$21.3M (+62%)$13.1M
Operating cash flow (Cash Flow disclosure)$(15.4)M$18.7M

Cloud demand—not just accounting adjustments—did the heavy lifting. Cloud subscriptions revenue grew 20% to $136.4 million, total subscriptions revenue increased 28% to $187.8 million, and cloud ARR expansion improved to 120% from 115% in the prior quarter. That combination points to stronger customer expansion and recurring-revenue momentum inside the business, not merely a one-off profit benefit. 〔0〕

Profitability is advancing faster than the prior plan. GAAP operating income rose to $21.3 million from $13.1 million, while adjusted EBITDA of $43.4 million exceeded the prior $30–33 million target range by a wide margin. The reported non-GAAP result is helped by excluding $4.7 million of litigation expense and $1.7 million of JPI amortization, but even before those exclusions, operating income improved substantially.

The main counterweight is cash conversion and liquidity. Quarterly operating cash flow swung to a $15.4 million use from $18.7 million of cash generation a year earlier, while cash and equivalents fell to $47.3 million at September 30 from $135.8 million at year-end. The company also held $41.6 million of short-term investments against roughly $199.5 million of total debt, so the earnings beat does not remove the need to monitor working-capital discipline and balance-sheet management.

Bottom line: Appian delivered a broad, substantial earnings beat and strengthened the cloud-growth and profitability story. The negative quarterly cash flow keeps the result from being flawless, but it does not outweigh the magnitude of the operating upside in this filing.
