Beat — GAAP EPS -$0.62 vs roughly -$1.30 consensus
REGENXBIO’s third-quarter earnings beat consensus, but revenue declined sharply and the EPS benefit came from a litigation settlement. The pipeline remains on track for major 2027 catalysts.
REGENXBIO is a late-stage gene-therapy company trying to move from clinical development toward potential launches for Duchenne and retinal disease, while its Hunter syndrome program remains under an FDA clinical hold. The near-term story is concentrated in RGX-202, wet AMD data for AbbVie-partnered sura-vec, and preserving enough cash to reach those milestones. The prior quarter had pointed to starting the RGX-202 BLA submission in Q3 2026, while wet AMD topline data remained expected in Q4 2026.
The headline earnings beat is low quality. GAAP loss per share was $0.62 versus a published consensus near $1.30 loss, but the quarter included a $38.0 million litigation-settlement gain rather than improved underlying operations.
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Results) | $9.2M (-69.2%) | $29.7M | ~$14.9M |
| Net loss per share (Net Loss) | $0.62 loss | $1.20 loss | ~$1.30 loss |
| Cash and securities (Cash Position) | $251.0M | — | — |
Underlying revenue was worse than expected. Revenue fell to $9.2 million from $29.7 million as ZOLGENSMA royalties dropped after U.S. patent expiration; new ITVISMA royalties contributed only $2.8 million. This is a structural decline in the legacy royalty base, not a temporary quarterly noise item.
The development pipeline remains broadly on schedule, but RGX-202 no longer reads as an unchanged timeline. The company now targets a pre-BLA meeting in Q4 2026 and a BLA submission in Q1 2027, whereas its August update had described initiating the submission in Q3 2026. That makes the Duchenne filing timing a modest setback versus the prior plan, even though potential approval is still framed for the second half of 2027.
Cash has improved enough to fund the next catalyst cycle. The balance increased to $251.0 million after the AbbVie milestone, equity financing and October settlement proceeds, with management extending the stated runway into late Q4 2027. That reduces near-term financing pressure, although part of the cash improvement came from dilution and one-time payments rather than recurring revenue.
The quarter leaves the core story mixed rather than overturned. Wet AMD pivotal data remains the decisive near-term test, while RGX-121 is still impaired by the FDA hold and no near-term resubmission plan. 〔0〕
Bottom line: This is a headline EPS beat, but the quality is weak because it depends on litigation income while revenue missed and the Duchenne filing shifted later. The business still has enough cash and intact retinal catalysts to keep the pipeline story moving, making the overall update modestly constructive but clearly mixed.
Wet AMD topline data, expected Q4 2026
