Wendy’s earnings beat but U.S. sales slide 7.6%

Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.13 vs published consensus ~$0.09

Wendy’s third-quarter earnings beat published estimates, but U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 5.7% and EBITDA dropped 18% as its new turnaround begins.

Wendy’s is in an early-stage turnaround: new CEO Bob Wright is rebuilding traffic, value perception, digital execution and franchisee economics after the company withdrew its 2026 outlook in the second quarter. The quarter beat on the income statement, but not because the core business improved. Adjusted EPS was $0.13 versus a published consensus of roughly $0.09, while revenue was $547.0 million versus a published estimate near $532.6 million. The beat was helped by items outside the basic traffic story; adjusted EBITDA still fell 17.8% year over year, and U.S. restaurant margin declined 140 basis points.

The important operating signal is deterioration in U.S. demand. U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 5.7%, worse than the 4.7% decline a year earlier, while global systemwide sales declined 5.9%. That is the opposite of what Dave’s Way ultimately needs to prove: the strategy is supposed to restore customer traffic and market share, but the filing shows traffic pressure, weaker franchise royalties and a smaller U.S. store base still weighing on the model. 〔0〕

Dave’s Way is now a real operating program, not just a management narrative—but it has not yet produced measurable business improvement. Wendy’s is narrowing breakfast by location, testing menu and marketing changes, and realigning the franchise system. The breakfast decision could eventually unlock up to $200 million in restaurant-level EBITDA across the system, but that is a management estimate, not current performance. The filing also includes $11.9 million of strategic initiative expenses, so the turnaround is consuming resources before the sales recovery is visible.

The planned portfolio action could improve franchisee economics, but it also raises execution complexity. Wendy’s signed a letter of intent to acquire up to 163 restaurants from Meritage, subject to a definitive agreement, higher offers and court approval. 〔1〕 The transaction would give Wendy’s more control over challenged locations and potentially place them with stronger operators, but it is not yet closed and adds company-operated exposure while margins are already under pressure.

Liquidity gives management room to invest, but not unlimited room for error. Wendy’s reported approximately $413 million of cash and $174.2 million of year-to-date free cash flow, while long-term debt remained about $2.7 billion. That supports the turnaround and possible restaurant acquisitions, but falling EBITDA and free cash flow make the capital allocation trade-off more important than the headline EPS beat.

Bottom line: Wendy’s narrowly beat earnings expectations, but the underlying business moved further backward in the U.S. The filing advances the turnaround plan, not the turnaround itself, so the overall read is slightly negative despite the quarterly EPS beat.
