Astec Industries Inc (ASTE) · Nov 5, 2026 · Earnings
Miss — Adj. EPS $(0.01) vs ~$0.50 consensus; revenue $352.4M vs ~$375.5M
Astec’s Q3 earnings missed published expectations, with adjusted EPS turning negative and full-year EBITDA guidance cut again despite a 49% backlog increase.
Astec is in the middle of a growth-and-transformation push: Materials Solutions has been expanding through acquisitions, while Infrastructure Solutions is still dealing with delayed asphalt-plant orders and uneven project timing. The prior quarter showed strong sales and backlog but already came with a reduced 2026 Adjusted EBITDA outlook of $160 million to $175 million.
The quarter was materially below the market bar. Q3 revenue of $352.4 million fell short of published expectations around $375.5 million, while adjusted EPS of $(0.01) missed consensus near $0.50. The company itself says results were “less than expected.” 〔0〕
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $352.4M (+0.7%) | $350.1M | ~$375.5M |
| Adjusted EPS (Adjusted EPS reconciliation) | $(0.01) | $0.47 | ~$0.50 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $18.9M (-30.3%) | $27.1M | |
| Backlog (Financial Highlights) | $670.5M (+49.2%) | $449.5M | |
| FY2026 Adjusted EBITDA guidance (Management commentary) | $140M–$150M | $160M–$175M prior |
The core problem is profitability, not just shipment timing. Sales were essentially flat year over year, but adjusted operating margin fell to 3.4% from 5.9%, with both segments posting lower operating EBITDA margins. Infrastructure Solutions was hit hardest: its margin dropped 430 basis points to 8.1%, while Materials Solutions fell 130 basis points to 8.5% as inflation, unfavorable mix and higher overhead absorbed pricing benefits.
The backlog surge does not yet repair the near-term earnings picture. Total backlog reached $670.5 million, and Infrastructure Solutions produced a strong 149% book-to-bill ratio, suggesting delayed asphalt demand is beginning to convert into orders. But Materials Solutions posted an 86% book-to-bill ratio, and the higher backlog has not translated into margins or current-quarter revenue yet. 〔1〕
Management cut guidance for the second consecutive time. The new $140 million–$150 million Adjusted EBITDA range is below the prior $160 million–$175 million range, a roughly 13% midpoint reduction. With nine-month Adjusted EBITDA at $91.8 million, the company now needs about $48 million–$58 million in Q4 to reach the revised range; that is achievable, but it underscores how much the year-end burden has increased.
Cash flow provides some cushion, but not a clean offset. Nine-month operating cash flow improved to $70.2 million from $25.3 million, and free cash flow rose to $48.0 million from $13.3 million. However, debt increased to $345.2 million from $319.6 million, while cash declined to $64.4 million, so the balance sheet is supporting the transition rather than eliminating execution pressure.
Bottom line: This is a clear step backward for Astec’s current story: demand may be returning, but the company is converting it into revenue and profit much less effectively than expected. The backlog is the recovery argument; the earnings miss, margin compression and second guidance cut are the present-tense reality.
