Rockwell Automation earnings beat on EPS, but sales miss and FY27 guide

Beat — Adjusted EPS $3.88 vs ~$3.55 consensus

Rockwell Automation earnings topped adjusted EPS expectations, though revenue missed. Its FY27 guide points to continued organic growth and margin expansion.

Rockwell enters fiscal 2027 as an industrial-automation company benefiting from demand tied to semiconductor, data-center, and increasingly software-led factory investment; the prior quarter had already shown strong demand in those markets and raised full-year fiscal 2026 guidance. The quarter was an earnings beat, but not a clean operating beat. Adjusted EPS of $3.88 exceeded the published consensus of roughly $3.55, while sales of $2.332 billion fell short of roughly $2.39 billion. The EPS outperformance was helped by stronger margins and unusual tariff-related benefits, so the headline profit beat says more about conversion and one-offs than about broad-based demand acceleration.

MetricQ4 FY26Q4 FY25Consensus
Sales (Financial Highlights)$2,332M (+1%)$2,316M$2,390M
Adjusted EPS (EPS reconciliation)$3.88 (+16%)$3.34$3.55
Enterprise operating margin (Segment results)24.5% (+3.2 pts)21.3%
Software & Control sales (Segment results)$754M (+15%)$657M
Lifecycle Services sales (Segment results)$519M (-9%)$573M

The strongest part of the business is increasingly clear: Software & Control is carrying the growth and margin story. Its fourth-quarter sales rose 15% organically and operating margin expanded to 34.0%, while Intelligent Devices grew 5% with margin expansion. That mix supports Rockwell's shift toward higher-value software and control products.

Services remains the drag beneath the consolidated results. Lifecycle Services revenue declined 9% as reported and only grew 2% organically after divestitures, while segment operating earnings fell to $85 million from $100 million and margin dropped to 16.4%. The Sensia dissolution and divestitures make the comparison noisier, but the underlying service business still did not match the momentum in software and devices.

The fiscal 2027 outlook keeps the broader growth thesis intact, but it is not an aggressive reset. Management guided to 6%-9% organic sales growth and adjusted EPS of $14.50-$15.50, implying continued double-digit adjusted-EPS growth from the $13.42 fiscal 2026 base. The guide is supported by healthy demand and new products, but the quarter's revenue miss and tariff distortions mean execution—not just demand—will determine whether Rockwell reaches the upper end.

Tariffs boosted the quarter's cash and profit optics while also obscuring underlying sales. Rockwell received $103 million of tariff refunds and recorded an $85 million customer refund accrual; the net after-tax effect added $0.11 to both diluted and adjusted EPS. That is not a recurring operating improvement, even though underlying margins also improved.

Bottom line: This was a modestly positive quarter because Rockwell beat on adjusted earnings and issued a credible FY27 growth guide, but the revenue miss and weaker services performance keep it from being a decisive upgrade to the story.
