Miss — Diluted EPS $0.41 vs ~$1.29 consensus
Onity’s Q3 earnings show a sharp servicing rebound and better efficiency, but diluted EPS badly missed consensus despite revenue edging ahead.
Onity is rebuilding around a larger, more capital-efficient mortgage servicing platform, using Originations to replenish servicing assets while navigating the loss of legacy subservicing and a difficult rate environment. Its prior quarter had established the direction: strong servicing and origination growth, but a GAAP loss and 2026 adjusted ROE guidance of 10%–15%, expected toward the low end.
The headline result missed the market’s earnings bar by a wide margin. Diluted EPS was $0.41 versus a published consensus of about $1.29, even though revenue of $278.1 million modestly exceeded the roughly $276.5 million expectation. The gap reflects how much the quarter still depends on volatile MSR valuation, hedge costs and loan-sale economics—not just operating revenue.
| Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS (Income Statement) | $0.41 | $(1.53) | $1.29 |
| Total revenue (Income Statement) | $278.1M | $282.9M | $276.5M |
| Adjusted pre-tax income (Financial Highlights) | $30M | $14M | |
| Annualized adjusted ROE (Financial Highlights) | 19% | 9% | |
| Servicing UPB (Financial Highlights) | $343B (+9%) | $341B |
The underlying servicing recovery is real, but it does not erase the GAAP miss. Servicing adjusted pre-tax income more than doubled sequentially to $29 million, while the company posted a record 51% operating efficiency ratio and added $53 billion of subservicing—already above its full-year target. 〔0〕 This supports the strategic pivot toward a larger servicing base with better operating leverage.
Originations and market volatility remain the counterweight. Originations adjusted pre-tax income fell 15% sequentially to $24 million, while the company said market volatility created an $11 million pre-tax unfavorable impact from hedge costs and Agency loan sales versus Q2. 〔1〕 〔2〕 The result is a business that is improving operationally but still produces weak reported earnings when market effects turn against it.
Bottom line: This was a mixed quarter leaning negative: Onity’s servicing strategy is executing better than before, but the large EPS shortfall shows that the recovery remains exposed to volatile mortgage-market marks and weaker Originations economics.
