Advance Auto Parts earnings hold EPS, but sales and comps lag

In line — Adjusted EPS $0.79 vs ~$0.785 consensus; revenue $2.012B vs ~$2.04B

Advance Auto Parts earnings were roughly in line on adjusted EPS, but revenue missed and full-year sales and comparable-store outlooks weakened.

Advance Auto Parts is still in a turnaround built around restructuring, distribution-network changes and converting stores and distribution centers into market hubs; the company’s stated aim is to restore profitable growth and eventually re-establish investment-grade credit.

The quarter improved operationally, but demand remained soft. Revenue fell to $2.012 billion from $2.036 billion, while comparable-store sales declined 1.2%; the late-quarter return to positive sales was encouraging, but it did not erase the full-quarter contraction.

Profitability was roughly on plan rather than a clear upside surprise. Adjusted operating margin reached 4.5%, up from 4.4% a year earlier, helped by lower adjusted SG&A, but adjusted EPS of $0.79 was essentially in line with the published consensus of about $0.785 while revenue of $2.012 billion missed the approximately $2.04 billion expectation.

The full-year update is mixed, not a clean raise. Free-cash-flow guidance increased to approximately $150 million from $100 million, but comparable-sales guidance was reduced to about 1% from 1%-2%, while the sales, margin and EPS ranges were narrowed around roughly unchanged midpoint levels. That says the turnaround is generating cash, but demand and top-line confidence have not materially improved. 〔0〕

Cash generation is the strongest part of the release. Operating cash flow was $311 million through 40 weeks versus a $118 million use a year earlier, and free cash flow turned positive despite continued restructuring and network-optimization spending. That supports the balance sheet, but it does not yet prove that the sales recovery is durable.

Bottom line: This was an execution improvement, not a turnaround inflection. Cash flow beat the prior plan, but the revenue miss and lower comparable-sales outlook leave the broader recovery story only modestly strengthened—and slightly weaker at the margin versus expectations.
