Trulieve earnings show 20% revenue drop as DEA relief arrives

In line — Adj. EPS $0.09 vs roughly $0.07 consensus; revenue $230.2M vs roughly $226–234M estimates

Trulieve’s third-quarter earnings show improving GAAP profitability and strong cash generation, but revenue and adjusted EBITDA declined sharply year over year.

Trulieve is now a more focused medical-cannabis operator after separating Harvest, with its core footprint centered on Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia while pursuing expansion opportunities in Georgia and Texas. The federal shift to Schedule III medical cannabis is beginning to move from policy into operating infrastructure, but the company’s underlying growth engine is still being tested.

The quarter was operationally resilient, not a growth win. Revenue fell 20% year over year to $230.2 million and adjusted EBITDA dropped 13% to $89.2 million, broadly consistent with the published revenue range and slightly ahead of the roughly $0.07 adjusted-EPS expectation at $0.09. Gross margin improved to 64% from 59%, but the higher margin did not offset the loss of sales scale.

Profitability improved because the business carried less tax and restructuring drag, not because revenue accelerated. Trulieve reported $0.9 million of net income attributable to common shareholders versus a $26.8 million loss a year ago, while adjusted net income reached $18.0 million. That is a meaningful cleanup from the prior-year comparison, but adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow both declined, so the quarter does not yet show a renewed top-line growth cycle.

Cash remains a cushion, but the balance sheet still carries a large tax overhang. Nine-month operating cash flow was $183.3 million and cash ended at $326.7 million, giving Trulieve room to fund expansion and licensing investments. However, uncertain tax-position liabilities remained $625.4 million, and total equity fell to $771.5 million from $1.14 billion at year-end. The filing therefore supports liquidity, not a clean balance-sheet reset.

The DEA registrations are strategically important but mostly already known by the filing date. Trulieve had disclosed its applications in the second quarter, and the registrations were announced separately on November 2; the November 5 earnings release confirms the milestone rather than surprising the market. The potential benefit is lower federal tax friction and a clearer operating framework, but the filing does not quantify the savings or show them in this quarter’s results. 〔0〕

The new branded-product license adds an expansion option, not immediate earnings power. The perpetual royalty-free Alien Labs and Connected license gives Trulieve genetics, trademarks, know-how, and rights of first refusal in additional markets, but the filing provides no revenue contribution, launch timing, or expected investment. It strengthens the product toolkit while leaving the near-term sales decline unresolved. 〔1〕

Bottom line: Trulieve delivered a cleaner profit and stronger margins than the headline revenue decline suggests, with adjusted EPS slightly ahead of expectations. But the core business is still shrinking year over year, so this is a mixed quarter that stabilizes the story without proving the promised acceleration has begun.
